topic in modern linguistics by Boas at the beginning of the twentieth century, evidentiality has been studied from different theoretical perspectives. In this section the major theoretical perspectives to evidentiality including typological perspective, cognitive perspective, pragmatic perspective, systemic-functional perspective and other perspectives will be reviewed. Evidentiality has been widely investigated cross-linguistically from typological perspective, which has demonstrated that evidentiality as a linguistic phenomenon is a universal feature and is therefore pervasive in almost all the world's languages. However, evidential systems vary from language to language in the number of information sources conveyed and in the way they are marked. The original interest in this linguistic phenomenon dates back to the studies of the American Indian languages, particularly those of the northern parts of California, where the marking of evidentiality through the use of verb suffixes is widespread. Franz Boas (1911:443) is taken as the first to use the term 'evidential' in his grammatical description of Kwakiutl. He states that 'To the suffixes expressing subjective relation belong those expressing subjective knowledge'. However, he uses it only in the meaning of 'something for which there is evidence', namely, in the way similar to 'inferred on the basis of visible traces'. In spite of this, the study of evidentials has been gradually turned to some other North American languages since then, yet no one has carried out a comprehensive treatment of them. Up to Jakobson (1957), the term 'evidential' was treated as a category broader than inference. Jakobson is also the first scholar to sharply differentiate between mood and evidentiality as independent linguistic categories.
