摘要:The study of language aptitude in second language acquisition has quite a lot.Language aptitude is widely considered as a facilitator for language learning. Since the invention of ModernLanguage Aptitude Test, this field has caught a lot attention at home and abroad.
Chapter Four RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
4.1 Data Collection Procedures
In this research, according to research questions, there are two groups of variables.Independent variable is foreign language aptitude while the dependent variable is oralEnglish fluency. Foreign language aptitude is considered as a basic variable, composedof phonological encoding ability, grammar sensitivity ability, language inductivityability and rote learning ability. In this research, as is shown in Table2.1, phonologicalencoding ability is tested by combined scores of Part II and Part III of MLAT, that is,phonetic scripts and spelling clues, because both parts test the ability of encodingsounds. Grammar sensitivity ability is tested by Part III of MLAT, that is, words insentence. Language inductivity ability is tested by Part I of MLAT, that is, numberlearning and rote learning ability is tested by combined scores of Part I and Part V ofMLAT, that is, number learning and paired associates.

Conclusion
The modified Modern Language Aptitude Test is reliable in this paper. The resultscalculated by SPSS reflect that the MLAT has a high internal consistency within itsconstituents. This again confirms the high reliability and predictive power of foreignlanguage aptitude. The statistics show that students differ greatly in their foreignlanguage aptitude. Although their English proficiency is at the same level, and theyspend almost equal time on English, their aptitude differs a lot. This conforms toCarroll’s opinion that language aptitude is innate which is different from languageproficiency.Besides, students vary greatly in language aptitude components, which show theyhave different ability strength. Compared with other components, language inductivityand grammatical sensitivity have the lowest standard deviation. The reason may be thatthe part-- words in sentence deals with students’ current grammatical ability. TheirEnglish proficiency in grammar is almost at the same level according to CollegeEntrance Examination scores. In addition, language inductivity is to measure the abilityto induce linguistic rules from samples. It happens throughout the whole learningprocess and is related closely to intelligence. Peter Skehan combines grammaticalsensitivity and inductivity of MLAT into language analytic ability (Skehan, 1998). Fromthe results in this paper, it is further confirmed that this two abilities are closely related.
