摘要:As the author said before,it is important for the students to have intensivelearning motivation, while it is much more important for them to have a clear cognitiveinterpretation of their learning performances when the learning activities areaccomplished.

Hence, the present research intends to study how Englishundergraduates evaluate and ascribe their spoken English learning performances and tostudy the attribution differences (if there are) revealed by students of different levels. Itis hoped that the findings of this research could provide some pedagogical implicationsto improve the spoken English teaching and learning in the future.


1.3 Organization of the dissertation
This dissertation is made up of five chapters. Chapter one is the introductionwhich introduces the background and significance of this study and the organization ofthe paper. Chapter two is the literature review, focusing on the most authoritative andrepresentative studies in this area, i.e. the definition of attribution, the briefdevelopmental history of attribution theory, the introduction to Weiner’s theory ofattribution, several theories and models to explain the second language acquisition aswell as the empirical studies on attribution theory in SLA sphere home and abroad.The third chapter is the research design, including the research objectives, the researchquestions, the research methodology containing subjects and data collection instruments and research procedures. Chapter four analyses the results from thequestionnaire and the interview and displays the discussion in detail. Chapter five isthe findings of the study and pedagogical implications the researcher puts forward forfuture spoken English language teaching and learning. The last part draws a conclusionin which a brief summary of the whole study, the limitations of the study and somesuggestions for further research will be mentioned.


Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 A General Introduction to Attribution
Attribution is a concept in social psychology referring to how individuals explaincauses of behaviors and events, and the theory that describes the process is calledAttribution Theory. In light of the point of view of the social psychologists, tounderstand ourselves, we must be able to identify what causes our thoughts, feelings,and emotion. Among all the social psychologists, Fritz Heider was the first researcherto propose the theory of attribution in his book —The Psychology of InterpersonalRelations (1958), and later Bernard Weiner developed a theoretical framework that hasturned into a major research paradigm in social psychology.The following part is a brief introduction to the six different theoretical traditionswhich form the basis of what is now known as attribution theory: Heider’s theory ofna ve psychology, Jones and Davis’ correspondent inference theory, Kelly’s work onco-variation and Weiner’s attribution theory (Joel B. Scanga, 2010).


1. Heider is the founder of the research into the contemporary attribution theory.Heider (1958) held that people attempt to identify the dispositional properties thatunderlie observed behavior. By attributing the behavior either to external (situational)or internal (dispositional) causes, they aim at the identification of the dispositionalproperties.
