摘要:Up to the present day, a good many researches have been done on the topic offossilization with the purpose of exploring the possible solutions to this issue. Theseresearches mainly cover the definition and the interpretation of fossilization, its casual factorsand the possible strategies to prevent it.
Conclusion
Over the past three decades, fossilization in the researches of second languageacquisition is no more one monolithic concept which is tied up with many variousmanifestations of failures in the process of second language learning. Many of the researcheson fossilization focus on the reasons of the phenomenon. Through these researches somepossible reasons of language fossilization are identified and analyzed from differentperspectives as the thesis mentioned before.Based on the previous researches and to study the written errors in English of students insenior high school in China, the present study analyzes the compositions of a class in JingxianMiddle School in Hengshui, Hebei Province. All the errors committed in the samplecompositions of the four writing tests are categorized from the linguistic perspective. Andthree main kinds of errors are focused on: lexical errors, grammatical errors, and syntacticerrors. What’ more, sixteen kinds of specific errors are identified and analyzed in details withexamples. With the help of Excel 2003, it is discovered that almost the same kinds of errors inthe subjects’ written production in English still exist after one-year learning in senior highschool. And the most common errors in the subjects’ English compositions are regarded asfossilized errors. Based on the data analysis, the author makes an attempt to explore somecauses of the fossilized errors/fossilization of the senior high school students in the process oflearning English.
The study of language fossilization is of great practical importance in second languageteaching and learning. Form the theoretical perspective, the study of language fossilizationmay improve the understanding of the process in second language acquisition. And from thepractical point of view, this kind of study may facilitate the searching of pedagogicalstrategies on preventing language fossilization to make second language learning and teachingmuch more effective.Here it should be sated clearly that this empirical study in the thesis is in a relativelysmall scale. What’s more, in the study the classification of errors is not very clear and some ofthem may overlap. Therefore, to get a clearer picture of the states of fossilization of the seniorhigh school students in English learning, more effective approaches and more comprehensivesurveys need to be explored for further study on this phenomenon.
