Conclusion


The present study was done with 72 first-year non-English majors in Hunan MassMedia Vocational Technical College and the study lasted for totally eighteen weeks.With CL method to lower students CA levels in EC and with the traditional teachingmethod in CC, the present study finds that almost all Chinese non-English majors didexperience moderate to high CA levels in traditional English class. In this study, morethan a half of students’ (59.7%) CA scores in the pre-questionnaire is 84 or higher than84. The applied CA control training did help reduce students’ CA levels and improvestudents’ oral English skills in some extent in EC compared with CC. The CA levelswithin the EC are reduced from 85.5135 to 77.6757 after the treatment. It is therelaxing and non-threatening atmosphere, more chances of using the target language,harmonious communication and cooperation with group members that help the studentsto be more confident and less anxious in English class. It is found that CL CA controltraining is very effective in lowering students’ CA levels and improving students’ oralEnglish proficiency.
As findings from the present study, about 59.7% students experience moderate tohigh level of CA in English classes, they always feel more anxious in English classespecially when they are asked to speak English in front of others. Besides, accordingto the result, CA has a great negative effect on students spoken English, it always leadsto the bad oral English performance. With too much CA, not only students’ oralproduction is hindered, but also their self-esteem and self-confidence is threatened. Sonot only should the teachers be aware of CA, but all the students should be aware ofthe existence of CA and know that it is a common problem in FL class as others mayalso share the same feelings as his or hers in the class.
