eech of young children in general (Hatch 1978). They are intralingual errors, includingovergeneralization, ignorance of rule restrictions, incomplete application of rules and falseconcepts hypothesized.
The author analyzes some aspects of students' psychological process in writing. First, thestudents' compositions are found to be arbitrary in paragraph dividing and lack topicsentences for each paragraph under the influence of Chinese discourse pattern. Training inoutline writing is helpful to solve this problem. Second, the students avoid the items theyare uncertain about by using substitutions or by abandoning the ideas. The author agrees onthe use of avoidance strategy in the compositions finished in limited time. But for thecompositions to be finished after class,the students should be encouraged to use dictionariesto deal with the items they are not sure about. The teacher should encourage the students to read widely and imitate the established native linguistic expressions in their writings so as touse less avoidance strategy.
The present study shows that using statistic tools to analyze the errors is an effectivemeans. It can facilitate the process of detecting the main problems and figuring out thedifferences between the more advanced and the less advanced learners. By using think aloudmethod, the teacher can learn about the students' psychological process of L2 writing anddetect the strategies they used in writing. Based on the findings of the analysis, thecorresponding remedial teaching methods can be more easily found out.To sum up, seen from the analysis of the students' exercises and assignments, thefollowing conclusion is drawn. Negative transfer,as a natural phenomenon in the process oflanguage acquisition, does exist at the levels of substance, lexics, syntax, paragraphs, andthoughts. And it seems impractical to erase the negative transfer in language acquisition. Butthe study also evidences that as the language learners' comprehensive knowledge of the targetlanguage increases, negative transfer will decrease to some extent, but will not be wiped out.Accordingly, the author of this thesis puts forward the corresponding strategies to avoidnegative transfer to promote target language acquisition and teaching as well.
