1.1.2 Significance
Interlanguage fossilization is unpredictable and it is customarily referred to as thestagnation of second language competence. Whether the first language is similar tothe target language or not, it will appear. Under this situation, some language errorshave become the fixed habits, and through the further language acquisition it is hardfor learners to rectify the error forms too. It can’t be denied that the languagefossilization is a stumbling block to the learners who aim at achieving sustainablelanguage development. No matter what age of the learners are, or how much theexplanations and instructions related to the target language they have received, somekind of their mother language expressions and rules reappear in the production ofinterlanguage after all. Therefore, exploring solutions to ease fossilization has bothessential academic and practical significance.
This study is about to probe into the possible causes of fossilization on the basis ofthe analysis of fossilized errors and the results of questionnaires and interviews.Putting linguistics and neurolinguistics into a research scope would provideserviceable theoretical basis for the subsequent SLA study, and offer practical andfeasible methods for interdisciplinary research with reference value to the latterlinguistics research as well. Moreover, this thesis introduces brain Science into the kingdom of linguistics' SLA study and integrates with the achievements of fMRI inorder to account for the possible causes of fossilization. This would give support tothe linguistics' academic research for getting more natural scientific foundations.After all, linguistics belongs to the modern scientific classification system and it canbe regarded as a branch of social science, which is one of the closest subjects tonatural science.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2. 1 Literature Review of Study on Fossilization
In English, "inter" means middle or in-between, and the Advanced Learner’sEnglish-Chinese Dictionary (Sixth edition) defined the "language" as “the system ofcommunication in speech and writing that is used by people of a particular country”.Therefore, it is not difficult to infer the meaning of "interlanguage" from its literalmeaning: a special type of language that is constructed on the bedrock of two differentlanguage systems, but this amazing language links to the two original languagesnaturally and it is influenced by both of them. The diversification of individual'smotivation, environment, learning competence, perseverance and other factors canlead to discrepancies of the interlanguage systems' structure inevitably.The theory of interlanguage was put forward by Selinker(1969,1972) for the firsttime, and the emergence of this innovational word was inspired by the bilingual studyof Weinreich(1953) and Haugen(1953:7). Weinreich divided the bilingual learnersinto two categories: one of them is the so-called Established Bilinguals, who start tospeak more than two kinds of languages from a very early age; the other group isnamed Developing Bilinguals.
