iewee answers, following the interviewer’s step. As is shown by
statistics, interrogative sentences appear in this part for 102 times, and among these sentences, about 93.1% are said by the interviewers. It is easy to understand. The interviewer has had primary knowledge of the interviewee by reading the resume, thus the purpose of the interview is to know more details of the interviewee and help the interviewer estimate whether the interviewee is the right man the company is looking for. Normally, the interview has two types of interrogative sentences. First one is yes/no questions, like “Do you…?” “Can you…?” “Would you…?” “Could you…?” “Will you?” This kind of questions appeared 49 times, occupying approximately 51.6% of all the questions asked by the interviewers in part one. The interviewers use yes/no questions for they have already had some basic information of the interviewees from their resumes, they now want to confirm those information and to ask the interviewees for something they are interested in. In the interviewers mind, they have a standard: they want to hear “Yes” for some certain questions, and hear “No” for some other questions. Questions started with “Would you like” or “Could you”, such as “Would you please say something about yourself?”, “Could you please tell me something about your family?” is also normally used. With modal auxiliary like “would” and “could” the sentences sound gentle. It makes the interview formal but not tense. When the interviewer uses this kind of interrogative sentence, the interviewee may feel like that the interviewer is discussing with him or her and will think that the interviewer is a genial people, then he or she will be more relaxed and might perform better in the interview. And the other one is wh- questions, for instance, “What are your hobbies?” This kind of interrogative sentence is quite normal, appeared 46 times, about 48.4% of all the questions asked by the interviewers in part one. It asks for answers from others directly, and almost all the interviewer will use it. By using these questions, the interviewers can get plenty of information from the interviewees. The interviewer also frequently uses indicative sentences, which account for nearly 49.0% of all the sentences the interviewers say in the first part. From the dialogues selected before, we can see that sometimes the interviewers may give some reaction after hearing the interviewees’ answers, like “Oh, I see.”, “It certainly sounds impressive.”, or sometimes they may have no reaction and move on to the next question instantly, which will make the pace of the interview more tense. Imperative sentences are also used by interviewers, but few, only constitutes about 4.4% of all the sentences that the interviewers say in the first part. The interviewers adopt this kind of sentences to demand goods & services, such as “Sit down please.”, or demanding information, like “Please tell me something about yourself.” This kind of sentences is a little bit mighty, which will make other people nervous, so the interviewers seldom use it.
As the interviewer is the dominator in this part, the interviewee should follow his or her pace, answering his or her questions. So about 97.0% of sentences the interviewees say are indicative sentences. In these sentences, the interviewees give information, such as personal data, education and working experience, career objective and so on, to t
