Proper use ofpoliteness can also show the user's capability of interpersonal communication. Therealization of politeness is implemented by the use of language. We can see the reviewer'sideological level, appreciation skill, and linguistic competence and so on. The evaluationshould be under the guidance of scientific theories and seeking truth from facts, avoiding topraise or criticize the movie by individual intuitive and prejudice. To carry out a completeand comprehensible movie review，certain rules should be abided by. What's more，sometechniques are required to write a good movie review and politeness strategy is one of theoften employed. Readers of a movie review, as we can see, are either the script-writer ofthe movie or potential audiences of the movie. When a reviewer gives his or her ownopinions, he or she must take the two parts of readers into consideration. It is so because theevaluation or judgment is a face threatening act in its nature. Politeness plays a key role inavoiding or reducing the threat. Therefore, researches on politeness are of great importance. 

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
Movie review is a genre of interpersonal communication. As the relationship between thereviewer and the readers is relatively stable, under such a circumstance, the reviewerswould like to maintain this stability by using proper language to shun disputes and conflicts.Thus; they would abide by the Politeness Principle. As the director and organizer of themovie review, reviewers should not only obey these principles but also know how toexercise them adroitly to create a good review. This thesis is going to investigate thelanguage in movie reviews from a politeness angle.This research is trying to find the answers to the following questions:1) What politeness strategies do reviewers generally employ in English movie reviews?2) How is positive politeness realized?3) How is negative politeness realized?This study is not without significance in the academic sense. First, it can explore thegeneral characteristics among the English movie reviews. Second, it can help us grasp thetrue meaning of a movie review when we read it. Third, it can broaden our mind and enableus to make an appropriate evaluation.

 

1.3 Data Collection and Analysis
To answer the above questions, the present study is going to focus on the realization formsof the politeness strategies, mainly the positive politeness strategies and negative politenessstrategies, from both the lexical and syntactic levels. The aim is to conclude the generalpatterns and the distribution of frequency of the realization models used in the politenessstrategies. It is hoped to draw a conclusion of characteristics of the distribution.Totally 30 pieces of English movie reviews are selected in this study. In order to makesure the data is reliable; they will be randomly selected from the movie review column of aworldwide newspaper——The New York Times.
