摘要:This thesis has made a tentative research on Chinese college students'impromptu speeches by applying the theory of metadiscourse. This chapter will firstlysummarize the findings of this thesis based on the analysis in Chapter four, and then itwill point out the contributions it has made. Lastly, it will reveal the limitations ofthe present study and give suggestions for further study

The highfrequency and different proportion of metadiscourse in the corpus indicate theimportance and the universal nature of metadiscourse while the detailed illustrationexplains its specific use in impromptu speeches. By doing this, wc can finally betterLindcrsland the importance of interpersonal interaction in impromptu speeches andhave a deep insights into the inner communicating organism of impromptu speeches.Since all languages are for communication and interpersonal, the impromptuspeech as a typical form of communication is uttered lo fulfill the interpersonalfunction of language. Interactive metadiscourse mainly functions to help the speakercreate convincing and coherent discourses and interactional metadiscourse helps thespeaker to interact with the audience.The significance of this research lies in both a theoretical aspect and an empiricalone. It hopes to test the credibility of the characteristics and resources of interpersonalmetadiscouse and to examine the applicability of metadiscourse theory to Chinesecollege students' oral English. Also, it means to unveil the underlying characteristicsof impromptu speech languages, showing the contributions metadiscourse can madeto help the speakers establish interpersonal relationships with the audience, thushelping them give a successful speech. And finally all this work may contribute to thelearning and training of oral English, through enhancing the ability of makingimpromptu speeches.

methodology and Data Collection
As mentioned above, this thesis is done from both a quantitative and a qualitativeapproach. With the quantitative method, the total number of metadiscourse resourcesis counted firstly with the help of Search Function of Microsoft Word, and thenexamined manually by the author for its metadiscoursal attribute. After getting thenumbers, the frequency and proportion of metadiscourse are shown with objective
statistics. Meanwhile, each subcategory of metadiscourse is compared with the others.With the qualitative method, the author explains how the metadiscourse resourcesexpress the interpersonal function in the specific genre of impromptu speech byexemplifying with samples. In a word, quantitative method and qualitative arecomplementary to each other and both of them are indispensable for this research.Data play an important role in discourse analysis, and since language is stronglycontext-based, the linguistic characteristics of different genres vary a lot. The reasonsfor impromptu speeches being selected has been explained above, which are itspopularity in English Speaking Contests and the fact that il can manifest the oralEnglish competence of the speaker. As a result, data in this research are carefullycollected.All the data for the present study come from the CCTV Cup English SpeakingContest held by CCTV-international and Foreign Language Teaching And ResearchPress. This competition has long been seen as a prestigious speaking contest allowingChinese college students to show their English ability. And this is why the presentauthor chooses it as the target. The corpus comprises 60 speeches in all amounting to10620 words with an average of 177 words per speech.
