ch she bought yesterday.
例9 中 “reading a book”是现在分词短语作定语,它可修饰“the gentleman”也可修饰“the lady”,由此歧义便产生了。
11:John saw Peter in the bus.
例12:Go straight forward and then turn right when you see a water tower.
(1) John saw Peter while John
was in the bus.
(2)John saw that Peter was in the bus. (约翰不在公车上)(3)John saw Peter while they both in the bus. 12,“When you see a water tower”是一个时间状语从句,此句可限定“then turn right” 也可限定整个句子,这就使例12 产生歧义,具有以下两种含义:(1)Go straight forwardand you will see a water tower, then turn right. (2)Firstly you will see a water tower, then go straight forward, and then turn right.
13:I know Simon better than you.
例14:John liked Jane as well as Tony.
(1)I know Simon better than you do. (= than you know Simon) Simon。 (2)I know Simon better than I know you.
(1)John liked Jane as well as Tony did. (=as well as Tony liked Jane) John 和 Tony 一样都喜欢Jane。(2)John liked Jane as well as John liked Tony.
15:The meeting was not called due to the airline strike.
例16:Jane doesn’t dance to please her mother.
(1)The meeting was hold not because of the airline strike.
(That is, the meeting’s holding is noting to do with the airline strike.) (2)Because of the airline strike, the meeting was cancelled.
(1)Jane dances not for pleasing her mother. (2)Jane gives up dancing in order toplease her mother.
17:The tiger is too small to kill.
例18: It is good for Franklin to do that.
(1)The tiger is too small to kill others. (2)The tiger is too small for others to kill. (=The tiger is too small to be killed by others. Here“kill” shows its passive meaning.)
(1)To do that is good for Franklin. (Franklin 本人做那件事)(2)For Franklin to do that is good.
19:The chairman appointed Mr. Brown an assistant.
例20:I found John an experienced doctor.
(1)The chairman appointed Mr. Brown to be an assistant. (2)The chairman appointed an assistant for Mr.Brown.
(1)I discovered that John was an experienced doctor. (2)I succeeded in finding an experienced doctor for John.
21:You can take the big one upstairs.
例22:Suddenly we heard the ship whistle.
You can carry the big one up the
stairs/to the upper floor. You can take the big one situated on the upper
floor.
