Introduction
In the 19th century Britain follows a kind of orthodox system of writing novels: lovers in the novel are always modest, courteous and loyal, young ladies are always beautiful, unsurpassed and even capricious. The only real love is the real love of extremely deferential, knight like and chivalrous. They regard women, as God and they are loyal to a certain woman with the fanatic passion. Among such a novel background, Jane Eyre comes on stage silently. Its writer Charlotte Bronte was born in 1816. She was the third daughter of a pastor who had gone to the Cambridge University and latter settled in Yorkshire. The protagonist Jane Eyre with totally different image makes people so surprised. The girl of Jane Eyre attracts everybody of us. Quite different from heroines to other works, Jane is a poor, plain, little orphan. What empresses our readers most is not her appearance but her personality. In her whole life, Jane does not stop struggling for her spirit of independence and self-dignity. Such king of women is seldom in that time. That is why the image of Jane Eyre remains attractive till today.
And, in this
thesis, I would like to discuss the forming process of Jane Eyre’s characteristics and it’s realistic meaning. Thesis is divided into three parts: 1 the influence of historical background; 2 the development of Jane Eyre’s personality; 3 It’s realistic meaning.
1.The influence of historical background
Charlotte Bronte, as well as her sisters, lived and died in the first part of the 19th century. At that time, there had long been the rapid industrial growth in England. Connected with improvement in industry and transportation there came the rise of a kind of new ruling class, the owner’s of mills and miners of the industrial age, who began to compete with the old landed gentry. In order to improve themselves, they tried to prove a good education for their children. In this economic and social situation, girls of good background began to go out to work. Bronte Sisters made their plans for earning their living in this condition. The position o the governess was as uncomfortable one, for, though they were of higher class than servants, they could not teach the level of family. Consequently, they often suffered from loneliness and humiliation.
2.The development of Jane Eyre’s characters
The growth of Jane’s personality can be divided into four periods: (1) Outburst at Gateshead (2) Recruit at Lowood school (3) Perfection period at the Thronfield (4) Maturity of Jane Eyre’s stable characters
2.1 Outburst period at gareshead
Jane Eyre is born an orphan, with unfortunate family and long time repressive feeling; she builds up her resistant emotion. Mrs. Read’s ill treatment, John’s imperious action, and Elizabeth’s and Georgiana’s cold attitude badly hurt her, even the servants make sarcastic remark s about her. As a girl who is raised in other’s home, she is as said by servant about as “less than a servant”, (p7) for she “does nothing for her keep”(p7) Without happiness in real life, and her only happiness becomes reading. The book creates her imagination and arouses her intelligence. She feels herself free and independent in the world created by the book, and seems to have found her in a happy land. But her cousin also spoils this simple way of self-consolation. For the first time, she raises an impulsive feeling of protection after numerous humiliations. After being beaten by Master John, she says to him, “Wick
