on Mrs. Fairfax at the first sight, and she gets well along with her though Fairfax is only a servant. Sometimes they talk leisurely before the hearth, and Jane feels that is “warm and happy”. Jane is mild to everyone. Adela, a girl without talent, is carefully by Jane and makes “ a surprising progress”. Jane is also a nature –lover, she often strolls and enjoys herself in the beauty of nature. Planted –hill, deserted –field and pale moon are more suitable to her indifferent mood. In such a wide world she forgets her pain and her misery. Furthermore, she learns to be tolerant to others’ shortcomings. Hearing that Mrs. Reed is dying, she comes soon to Gateshead. Although she once has told Mrs. Reed that she never wants to see her again, she forgets and forgives Mrs. Reed. Jane ‘s delicate feeling is best revealed when she meets Rochester. She falls in love with Rochester. At first she is wandering with contradictory mind. On the one hand she cannot help thinking of Rochester every day and night; on the other hand, she cannot be sure whether Rochester loves her or not. She imagines what Rochester would think of her, concerns whether Rochester will marry Miss Ingram or not, and she is tormented by why Rochester is scold towards her. This is the reasonable and complicated psychology of woman in lov e. If little Jane’s rebellious to Mrs. Reed, Jhon Reed or even the headmaster of the Lowood School is instinctive; her request of independence of soul and equality of spirit from her lover Mr. Rochester is reasonable. She also thinks that woman needn’t always to be passive and smile to hint man and they can express their own true feelings. Jane respects the mutual equality of personality. Her viewpoint shows that she has clear self-consciousness, self-esteem, and awake sense of love. She believes that men and women are equal—if not in property, then in personality.
I have as much as soul as you, and full as much heart! And if God had gifted with some beauty, and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, or even of mortal flesh:-it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God’s feet, equal,--as we are.(167)
From this paragraph, we have an impression that these languages are not written by someone but flows out in a flash blazingly and sharply. I t can’t afford to control. It is the soliloquy of Jane’s true view of love, which makes every reader shocked. When Mr. Rochester sincerely speaks to Jane---“Come to my side, Jane, and let us explain and understand one another.” “ My bride is here; because my equal is here and my likeness. Jane, will you marry me?” Jane finally says after suspect and surprising, “ Sir, I will marry you”. When reading here, we are sure to think that this is a happy final result, --- and Jane will manage their house Thornfield after marriage and enjoy the happiness that marriage brought to her--- both material and spiritual. But Jane is different from
