the common woman, and her special personality determines that she will not take the way we expected. Even though she is in love, she is still rational, sober and keeps her own independent personality. She announces to Rochester from the beginning---“I am not an angel, I will be myself.” As a penniless governess with plain appearance, if she wants to keep the independence of personality, she should guarantee the economic independence first. It can be said that if she is willing or if she does not refuse, she can get countless jewelry and magnificent clothes from Mrs. Rochester. But Jane says, “Oh sir! —Never mind jewels! I don’t like to hear them spoken of. Jewels for Jane Eyre sounds unnatural and strange: I would rather not have them.” “An
d then you won’t know me, sir; and I shall not be your Jane Eyre any longer, but an ape in a halequinss’s jacket, ---a jay in borrowed plumes.” “I only like this: don’t send for the jewels, and don’t crown me with roses: you might as well put border of gold lace round that plain pocket handkerchief you have there.” “I shall continue to act as Adele’s governess; by that I shall earn my board and lodging, and thirty pounds a year besides, I will furnish my own wardrobe out of that money, and you shall give me nothing but your regard.” Jane’s soliloquy makes the readers understand and appreciate her equality and independence deeply. She now faces dilemma as whether to stay with Mr. Rochester or to leave her lover to retain her dignity and independence. But in fact, Rochester’s wife appears, and Jane has to leave look for another suitable place. Her distress creates a chance for her to clarify and balance her mind and emotion during fairly long time, and then forms her stable characters.
After leaving Rochester, Jane never gives up her life. When she is penniless, homeless and in danger of being attacked by other woods, she fights against nature with strong living will and ties her night. The description of her struggle against nature for life is praise a song for Jane. Jane’s confidence plays the most important role in supporting her to overcome many hardships. This is not what ordinary woman can accomplish, no matter in which era, readers will be shocked and deeply moved by this kind of spirit of hers. At last, a clergyman saves her Mr. St. John and his two sisters. So John is a Puritan. In John’s faith, she saw a religion that was neither absurd nor selfish. She recognized in him self-control similar to that which she herself has achieved. His influence over her came in the guise of a c
