ed and cruel boy”, “You are like the Roman emperor!” (P6) Her emotion bursts out as strong as flood, as fierce as volcano, which cannot be stopped. Her action so frightens almost every one in Gateshead that they begin to take a new eye on her. The lesson of “John Incident” encourages Jane to struggle against Mrs. Read for her deserved position instead of crushing. As a result of Jane’s first rebellion, she is locked in a Red-house, in which the girl feel so frightened and impressed that she cannot forget later in her life. Putting into “jail” sentenced by a mature woman to a girl of ten years age is deadly unjust and inhuman, just like Jane thinks “Unjust ---- Unjust”. In the red-house, Jane reminds all sorts of unjust things she suffered before----John’s bossy, his supercilious elder sisters, his unkind mother, the partial servants—“unjust, unjust” ---the rebellious consciousness outburst from her heart like the waterfall. She doesn’t fear force and dares to speak directly what she thinks. To Mrs. Read who is her benefactor, the always docile Jane Eyre has expressed her own feeling of being unfairly treated, “I am not deceitful; if I were, I should say I loved you; but I declare, I do not love you, I dislike you the worst of anybody in the world except John Read; and this book about the liar, you may give to your girl, Georgiana, for it is she who tell lies”, “I am glad you are no relation of mine: I will never call you aunt again as long as I live I will never come to see you when I am grown up; and if any one asks me how I liked you, and how you treated me, I will say the very thought of you makes me sick, and that you treated me with miserable cruelty.”, “People think you are a good woman, but you are bad; hard-hearted. You are deceitful!” After voicing her resentment to her evil and kindness aunt, Jane feels that she is the winner of the field, and it is the hardest battle she had fought, and the first victory she has gained. And of course, this is directly resulted that Jane is sent to Lowwod school, which is special for girls from poor families. Jane feels that her life had its gleams of sunshine because she indeed likes to leave Gateshead and go to school. From then on she gets rid of the oppression by the family forever. It makes the turning point in her life. This is the first step of the turning point in her life. T his is the first step of the development of Jane Eyre’s characters.
It is hard for people to imagine or believe that such a short, plain and weak girl contains so strong a soul. She strived for equality and independence since she was a little girl. Jane had the courage to be against whoever insult her in spite of the sever punishment that followed. With regard to flesh, Jane was obviously weak, but on mind, she was undoubtedly a great woman and winner. Her flexible rebellious spirit makes those people who treated her badly and bring them countless sleepless nights.
2.2 Recruitment period in Lowood school
We preliminarily see Jane’s rebellious spirit from her child life and can continually find out how the writer develops it to a higher level in Lowood School.
The Lowood School is the most terrible school we can imagine. Girls of there don’t have enough meal, suffering cold in winter, and the living conditions there are extremely abominable—dirty and even have pestilence. Girls are always punished to stand still, or humiliate in public. However, Jane feels very glad to leave Gateshead for here, because Ja
