ne is thirst for freedom and independence, and wiliness to stand tribulation and hardships for them. All these foreshadows that she leaves Mr. Rochester because of freedom and independence.
In Lowood School, Jane reads “The Bible” like other girls, but she has a thought different from a lot of Christians. She does not agree with returning good for evil, and “ Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.” but she believes in “Eye for eye, and Christian and civilized nations down it.” She even speaks to Hellene, “ If people always kind and obedient to those who are cruel and unjust, the wicked people would have it all their own way; they would never feel afraid, and so they would never alter, but would grow worse and worse.” This is Jane, like a warrior, is ready to fight for any unfairness in society at any time. It seems incompatible with code of ethic at that time and is condemned by feudal apologist at that time, and even say “she has an uneducated and untransformed spirit from the beginning to the end.” “We can’t see the Christianity of spirit kindness from her.” But it is just her resisting unjust, pursuing freedom and calling for equality that she is so far still liked by a great amount of readers.
During her stay in Lowood School, Jane not only keeps her rebellious spirit but also develops her personality. Jane Eyre develops an optimistic view towards life and possesses outstanding aesthetic; she believes that she could reach her life’s aim based on her hard work. She cherishes friendship despite Helen and Temple’s. She doesn’t judge a person according to their appearance. She probes people’s inner world, tires to find beauty, which could lead to her march on forever. Helen and Temple appears to be Jane’s teachers, who tells Jane the right attitude towards people and world Jane absorb their peaceful, kind creed and take on a similar world’s view, this is Jane’s spiritual prop. Apart from them, she gets more knowledge from books and experiences. She is sensitive to feeling and beauty in life, enjoying them and absorbing them to become herself, she is a thin flower, but she is strong, brave, faithful and persistent. She draws the essence in the air, she feels the world with her heart, and she describes the world with her drawing. Her life is hard, but beautiful, she always insists on her belief.
Although life in Lowood School makes a chance for Jane Eyre to develop her partial characters, but the environment is too limited, dull and tedious for her, “And now I feels that it is not enough I tired of the routine of eight years in one afternoon. I desired liberty; for liberty I gasped; for liberty I uttered a prayer; it seemed scattered on the wind then faintly blowing. I abandoned it and framed a humbler supplication; for change, stimulus; that petition, too, seemed swept off into vague space: Then, I cried, half desperate, grant me at least a new servitude!” She needs to breathe fresh air, to get alone with various people, and to learn more about the people and the society. So she is determined to leave Lowood School.
