Introduction
Both Ernest Hemingway and D.H. Lawrence are the greatest writers in American and English literary world. And their literary works are still very popular today.
Ernest Hemingway was born on July21, 1899,at Oak Park, near Chicago. Under the influence of his father, he liked fishing and hunting, and wanted to be a journalist. After the First World War, he reported battles in the Near East for the Toronto Star, in 1922 he settled in Pairs and mixed in the literary circles, especially in the expatriate group, for which Paris was famous in the 1920s. He became a close friend of Gertrude stein, Erza Pound and Scott Fitzgerald. Gertrude Stein once addressed to these group of young men who escaped from the U.S.A. “You are all a lost generation.” Her remark proved out from the fact that Hemingway became the representative writer of the Lost Generation later, and her style of repetition with minute variations strongly affected Hemingway both in the rhythms of his prose and in his way of conveying emotion as immediate experience.
The Sun Also Rises, published in 1926, is the very representation of lost generation. It depicts a group of wandering amusing, but aimless people, who are caused impotent in the war and removed from the oath of ordinary life. The main male character Jack in this novel is an American, who was caused impotent during the war. There is no aim in his life, and the only person he cares is Brett, who he loves deeply but cannot live with her together because of his wound. Brett, the very representation of “Lost Generation” in this novel is depicted as an aimless and hopeless woman, being in dilemma almost all the time in the novel. For one thing, she cannot really live together with Jack; for another; there is no real love and happiness when she contacts with other men.
D.H. Lawrence was born at a mining village in Nottinghamshire. He was also affected by the war and the conflicts between nature and mechanical civilization. In Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Lawrence’s thoughts have returned to his early subjects and background of Nottinghamshire. By presenting an old romantic story about an aristocratic lady who deserts her half man, half machine husband to find love with a man of nature.
There are many research and studies about these two novels. Matin writes a
thesis about the new female characters in The Sun Also Rises. And Ge Lunhong once gives an analysis on the characters in Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and many others. But still now, I have not found any study on the comparison between the main characters in these two masterpieces.
And, in this thesis, I would like to discuss the similarities and difference of the characters in these two great works. Under the same historical background, both the works are finished after the First World War, they have something in common. The two main male characters are caused impotent, and they also are different since they have differen t attitude on life. Facing the similar situation, the two main female characters in these two works live two different lives because their different attitudes to life. And in these theses, I also try to discuss the influence from the two authors.
1. The influence of historical background
The First World War is usually regarded as the watershed in British and American
history, for it has hastened radical changes in almost every field of these two countries. It brings misfortune on humanity, but was an important factor in stimulating America
