mechanical world. And he also wants to depict a distorted world, which resulted in mechanical production.
From Clifford Chatterley’s other behavior, we can also see his class discrimination, when he asks Connie to have a lover for a baby only on condition that the blood is up-class, when he known that Connie’s lover is Mellors, he feels that it’s ashamed and it’s a thing of losing face. So in his mechanical eyes, he thought that Connie would come back if she is awake. His class-consciousness is very strong which doesn’t present in Jack Barnes’s mind.
3. The similarities and difference between the two main female characters
Then, let we come to the two main female characters in these two works. How do they face life when their lover or husband is impotent in sex?
In The Sun Also Rise, Brett is aimless and doesn’t know what to do next when facing to Jack’s wound,. She loves Jack Barnes deeply as Jack Barnes loves her, but she won’t marry Jack except Jack’s condition permitted them to live together. However, Jack’s condition seems no better than before. Thus, Brett chooses a life with wine, traveling and gets close with other men for fun. From this point, she and Connie are alike: they pay more attention to sex and can abandon the old discrimination about female’s sex to find their true love. We can also infer that Hemingway seems have the same idea about sex as Lawrence: The full combination of spirit and body make a perfect love affair. Brett and Connie are not only two women but to extraordinary women for the age for they are the typical presentation of sexual liberation.
Although Brett and Connie had something in common, they had many difference.
Brett, the very representation of “lost generation” in this novel is depicted as an aimless and hopeless women, she is in dilemma almost all the time in the novel. For on n dilemma since the reality and his dream have along distance. He has experienced the war by himself, and he has tasted the cruelty of the war, so he hated the war. The main male character in The Sun Also Rises is somewhat the same like Hemingway himself. He is a journalist, wounded in the war, and he has no way to do anything to change the reality. He is totally frustrated by the war and returned from that “great war” to his own country, when he comes to know the grim reality that the social values and civilization are hollow and affected if compared to the cruel realties of the battleground, Hemingway in The Sun Also Rises deliberately retreats into characters private emotion: since he is often haunted by his own painful recollections of war and by images of violence. Jack and Bret are created in this condition, and are called the representation of “lost generation”. On the other hand, Hemingway seems also having the same faith with Lawrence: both of them have a passionate love for the beauty of the natural world in The Sun Also Rises; Hemingway depicts many beautiful places and natural way of living. Jack and Brett’s traveling compared with the bullfight in Spain symbolically as a criticism of the feckless atmospheres of postwar life, especially turns out the author’s love for the nature and the hate to the civilization life.
On psychology, both Lawrence and Hemingway in these two novels believes that the healthy way of the individual’s psychological development not only lay in the spirit’s emotion but also lay in the sexual impulse. Human sexuality is, for Lawrence, a symbol of life force: any kind of conscious
