n economic development. The capitalist industry in America develops rapidly in post-war. However, British capital London loses his industrial supremacy in the world. The economic flutter deeply affects people’s thoughts, great changes taken place in literature. During the second half of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century, most literature works belong to naturalism or realism. But at the end of the First World War, there appears an important literary development: the modernistic trend. Modernism takes the irrational philosophy and the idea of psychoanalysis as its theoretical base. The major themes of the modernist literature are the distorted, alienated and ill relationship between man and nature, man and society, man and man, and man and himself. It emphasizes on the need to move away from the public to the private, from the object to the subject. Both The Sun Also Rises and Lady Chatterley’s Lover have the trait of modernism. The Sun Also Rises is the representation of “lost generation”. In this story Ernest Hemingway uses a bullfight in Spain symbolically, as a criticism of the feckless atmosphere of postwar life and the author’s knee to the nature. In Lady Chatterley’s lover, Lawrence tries his best to depict distorted thoughts and an artificial society. By presenting an old romantic story about an aristocratic lady who deserts her half-man, half-machine husband to find love with a man of nature. Lawrence not only condemns the civilized world of mechanism that distorts all naturally relationship between men and women, but also advocates a return to nature. The characters in these two works are the very representation of modernism works. 2. The similarities and the difference between the two main characters in these two works In The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway uses his wartime experience as the base to depict a group of wandering, amusing, but aimless people, who are caught in the war and removed from the oath of ordinary life. The main male character, Jack in this novel, caused impotent in the war, bears the wounds of the war in a profoundly way. In The Lady Chatterley’s Lover, D.H. Lawrence also depicts the influence of World War I, which deeply affected Clifford Chatterley, who is also caused impotent during the war. He began this story with: “Ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically… ychology. Shortly after his returning to Wragby Hall, he still is ambition, and he had taken to writing stories: curious, very personal stories about people he had known. The stories are clever, rather spiteful, and yet, in some mysterious way, meaningless. The observation was extraordinary and peculiar. But there was on touch, no actual contact. It was as if the whole thing took place in vacuum. As Connie’s father once said to his daughter, “but there was nothing in it”. Big and strong as he was, he was helpless. He could wheel himself about in a wheeled chair, and he could puff slowly round the park. But alone he was like a list thing. He needed Connie to be there to assure him existed at all. Later, he concentrates on improving the production of the mine, which causes the coalmine and miners more mechanical than ever. After Connie’s escape with Mellors, he feels hopeless and finally depends on the servant like a child in mentality. Lawrence, in this novel, tries to use Clifford as a symbol of the lifeless civilized mechanical world, while Hemingway uses Jack Barnes as a symbol of anti-论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
