本文是一篇英语论文提纲,本翻译实践以纽马克的交际翻译理论为指导,以汉语读者为中心来传递信息, 从而实现交际目的。翻译过程中主要针对源文本的语义、结构、逻辑、文化,四个方面进行调整与适应。

Chapter 1 Task Description

1.1 Selection of the Source Text

The source text in this translation practice is the book Education in Word history, which was published by Routledge in 2023 in hardback, paperback, and e-book. The book, co-authored by Mark Johnson and Peter Stern, focuses on the development of education at different stages of history and in different regions. The book presents different educational traditions and practices, and discusses how they have evolved and influenced each other over time. The translator chose this book, especially the first chapter for the translation practice, due to the following three reasons. 

Firstly, the source text is rich in content and has translation value. It tells about the development of education in different historical stages and different regions, showing readers the history of the development of education vividly as well as some related cultures in different regions of the world. Translating this book will help Chinese readers understand the history of education development in the world and broaden their international perspective. Through reading this book, Chinese readers can learn from the experiences of education in the world, promote the development of education in their own countries, understand the history of education in different countries, summarize the lessons learned from them, and select the excellent educational concepts and practices for the development of education in their own countries. In addition, some cultural phenomena appearing in the book can help Chinese readers better understand the similarities and differences of education culture around the world and promote the exchange of education culture between China and foreign countries.

1.2 Features of the Source Text

Reiss (2004), the founder of functional translation theory, pointed out that the translator’s understanding of the features of the text will affect the translation, and understanding the features of the source text can help the translator determine translation strategies, analyze the important and difficult points in translation, and better understand the meaning and information of the source text. There are three features exist in the selected text: 

First, the selected text is informational text. According to Newmark (1988), texts can be classified into three categories based on their communicative functions: expressive texts, vocative texts, and informative texts. Expressive texts focus on conveying the emotions and thoughts of the author, such as literary works and philosophical writings. Vocative texts aim to elicit a response from the readers, such as brochures, advertisements, and instructions. Informative texts, on the other hand, aim to objectively convey information from the source text to the readers, such as scientific or popular science books, technical publications, and news reports. The selected text meets Newmark’s definition of informational text.
