Chapter 2 Translation Process

2.1 Pre-translation Stage

With the development of artificial intelligence,machine-assisted translation isbecoming more and more frequent in people's vision.At the beginning of our first year ofgraduate school,the college arranged for us to take an introductory course in Trados,but atthat time,we only had a superficial understanding of the software and did not thoroughlystudy it.During my internship,the translator learned about another translation assistancesoftware,MemoQ.

MemoQ is user-friendly and easy to operate and integrates the translation and editingmodule,translation memory library module,and terminology library module into onesystem.MemoQ is also the most comprehensive translation aid that integrates externaltranslation memory and terminology.With access to massive external language assets,ithas greatly improved the efficiency of assisted translation and become a new force ofcomputer-aided translation software.MemoQ is also gaining momentum in China,where ithas quickly grown into a mainstream computer-aided translation software second only toSDL Trados.

Compared to other CAT tools,memoQ has some special functions,such as Live Docs,View,X-Translate,Muses,Web Search,Backup,Version History,Snapshot,andMonolingual Review,all these functions can ensure the completion of the translation tasks.However,machine translation only serves as an auxiliary role for the translator,whichcan generate drafts and improve efficiency.The translator needs to establish a glossary toensure consistency of terminology throughout the text.Quality assurance tools can reducelow-level errors in translation.However,for literary translation,it is difficult for machinetranslation to convey the literariness therein,so the most important part,polishing,andproofreading steps are still completed by the translator.

2.2 While-translation Stage

To ensure the successful completion of translation practice,the translator made adetailed and specific plan.The original text of this report contains 16,805 English words.The language is relatively ordinary and the overall difficulty is moderate.However,thereare some words describing scenery and architecture in the text,which need the translator to carefully analyze the words.Therefore,the translator decided to finish the translation ofabout 1,000 words every day,which will take 17 days to complete a translation draft.Afterthat,the translator spent another 5 days polishing and revising some sentences based on thefirst draft.A month later,the translator conducted a second self-review,discussing andrevising the key points and difficulties with classmates.
