The loud sounds generated by road transportation in London intrude into the auditory spaces of the diegetic characters, and reflect the social phenomenon of glorifying the British civilization and vilifying the Indian society. In Mrs. Dalloway, Peter Walsh, a colonial administer of the British Empire in India, has returned to London. As he roams around the London streets, the loud whirr of the ambulance arouses Peter Walsh’s attention and reminds him of the efficiency and civilization of the British Empire.

Chapter Three Sounds of Air Transportation and Wars
3.1 Sound Violence Abused by Aeroplanes as War Weapon
During World War I, numerous aeroplanes, such as bombers and fighters, were harnessed by the imperialists as efficient war weapons to fight with their rivals for more power. In this process, those aeroplanes generated high-decibel sounds which continually intruded into the auditory spaces of the civilians. R. Murry Schafer describes “sound imperialism” as that “when sound power is sufficient to create a large acoustic profile, we may speak of it too, as imperialistic” (Schafer, 1994: 77). The high-decibel sounds generated by aeroplanes not only shaped a large acoustic profile, but also brought threat of death to the civilians. Jürgen Müller argues that “the frequent instrumental use of sounds for political or ideological objectives in history is all too obvious, … Noise, whether melodious or cacophonous, soporific or irritating, low or loud, is a powerful medium of public manipulation” (Müller, 2012: 457). The noisy sounds generated by aeroplanes in World War I were harnessed by the imperialists as a political instrument to manipulate the civilians. By depicting how the civilians are dominated by the high-decibel sounds generated by aeroplanes in three novels including The Years, Mrs. Dalloway, and Between the Acts, Virginia Woolf exhibits the sound violence of World War I, and expresses her criticism of the imperialists’ insane quest for power.
The high-decibel sounds generated by bombers in air raids of World War I disturbed the normal life of t本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
