Chapter One Sounds of Maritime Transportation and Colonization

1.1 Commercial Colonization Implied by the Sounds of Trade Ships

With the missions of expanding territories and plundering natural resources, numerous trade ships were driven by the British Empire to its overseas colonies. The loud sounds generated by the sailing trade ships signify the economic exploitation of the British Empire and become soundmarks of commercial colonization. Virginia Woolf discerns the significance of the British trade ships in the process of the British colonization and depicts them as “soaring and winged creatures” (Woolf, 2013: 2) in an essay entitled “The Docks of London”. The soaring soundscape of the trade ships in the Thames River are associated with their “glorious” mission of overseas commercial colonization: “the big ships and the little ships, the battered and the splendid, ships from India, from Russia, from South America, ships from Australia” (2-3). The purpose of these British trade ships is to plunder natural resources in the colonies, which helps to accumulate wealth and expand territories for the British Empire. Virginia Woolf witnesses the colonial activities performed through the British trade ships and depicts the loud sounds generated by trade ships in her two novels Orlando and The Voyage Out to express her criticism of the British commercial colonization.

英语论文范文怎么写

The firing sounds generated by trade ships remind the diegetic characters of the British colonial expansion in the colonies. When hearing the firing sounds generated by trade ships from the English Channel, Orlando immediately recalls the British history of colonization characterized by sea battles and hegemonic trade: “she heard a gun far out at sea, and thought at first, ‘That’s the Armada,’ and then thought, ‘No, it’s Nelson,’ and then remembered how those wars were over and the ships were busy merchant ships; and the sails on the winding river were those of pleasure boats” (O, 2018: 228). The firing sounds Orlando hears from the English Channel indicate that the British trade ships which are equipped with enough cannons and other firepower are fighting with those of other colonial empires for more power. Besides, the firing sounds from the English Channel remind Orlando of the Spanish Armada and Horatio Nelson, one of the greatest naval commanders in history. Barry Truax argues that soundmarks “become associated with long-term memories” and “create an extremely important continuity with the past” (Truax, 1984: 59). The firing sounds of cannons equipped in trade ships sailing in the English Channel are continually associated with Orlando’s long-term memories of the British imperial colonial history.

1.2 Military Colonization Implied by the Sounds of Battleships

As an efficient tool of commercial colonization, trade ships helped the British Empire plunder incredible wealth from its overseas colonies. In addition, battleships were harnessed by the British Empire as a tool of military colonization to compete with its colonial rivals for more interests and power. Depending upon its powerful Royal Navy, the British Empire defeated the colonial rivals and became the “Empire of the Seas”.
