4.1 The silence of identity

As the driver of the whole story,the middle sister connects the story clues through thefirst person in the story,and weaves the character line,place line and time line into anetwork system to outline the whole story.“I”takes an unnamed city as the center andassociates the character’s activities,contradictions and conflicts with a specific situation.From the perspective of anonymous narrative,the causes and consequences are clarified.In the collision between the protagonist and the public identity silence,the external outlineand inner activities of many silent narrators are drawn at the macro and micro levels.

The Silence Narration of Milkman will be analyzed in the identity silence.Theanalysis of identity silence can be divided into two parts.On the one hand,this novel usesa bold experimental style,without any names,place names,all with code names.Thenarrator is known alternately as“the middle sister”,“maybe-girlfriend”,“the girl whowalks”and“longest friend”.The other characters are also identified by epithet—“thirdbrother-in-law”,“nuclear boy”,“Somebody McSomebody”—like a Greek epic poem or acode-named dossier.On the other hand,gossip is the pusher of silence.The suspicion andvigilance among people and the lack of sense of security lead to various forms of silence:active silence,passive silence,disguised silence,individual silence and collective silence.Among the characters in Milkman,out of different reasons,different narrators keep thesilence of the same properties.
