Chapter Four Findings and Implications 

Based  on  the  framework  of  Burke’s  Identification  Theory,  this  thesis  attempts  to analyze  America’s  State  of  the  Union  Addresses  2012-2015.  It  is  to  study  the  effects  of identification strategies adopted by Obama in State of the Union Address. After research, we have found that these identification strategies adopted by Obama have strong power to affect addressers. Hence, this part will include two parts, one is the findings, and the other is the implication of the research. 

4.1 Findings of the Research 

Under  the  framework  of  Burke’s  Identification  Theory,  this  thesis  aims  to  do  a research  on  America’s  State  of  the  Union  Addresses  2012-2015.  It  aims  to  analyze  the identification  strategies  adopted  by  Obama  and  how  to  achieve  identification  by  using them. This thesis selects 4 pieces of State of the Union Addresses as the data. Within the framework of Identification Theory, many examples are categorized and studied. Therefore, this  part  will  use  data  table  to  demonstrate  different  identification  strategies’  frequency appeared in State of the Union Addresses 2012-2015 to show the findings of the research.In  State  of  the  Union  Addresses,  Obama  tries  to  overcome  the  division  by  using identification  strategies.  After  analysis,  we  found,  that  the  most  effective  way  of overcoming division is to adopt content identification, namely, identification via sympathy, identification  via  antithesis  and  identification  via  inaccuracy.  Table  4.1  shows  the frequency  and  percentage  from  the  aspect  of  Rhetorical  Content  in  State  of  the  Union Addresses 2012-2015.

Conclusion 

Within  the  framework  of  Kenneth  Burke’s  Identification  Theory,  this  thesis  aims  to make an analysis of Obama’s State of the Union Addresses 2012-2015. Through analysis, we find that both the speaker and the audience are involved in the process of identification.
