Chapter One Literature Review

1.1 Previous Studies on Burke’s Identification Theory 
Kenneth  Burke  is  the  leader  of  New  Rhetoric  which  has  attracted  lots  of  concern  in the world. Identification Theory, as the key concept of Burke’s New Rhetoric, has provided a  new  view  for  discourse  analysis.  Hence,  as  for  Identification  Theory,  there  are  many linguists who have studied it, both at home and abroad. As the key point of Burke’s New Rhetoric, identification, which is rooted in the notion of substance, appears in Burke’s A Rhetoric of Motive for the first time. It is important to distinguish  Burke’s  theory  from  Aristotle’s  traditional  rhetoric.  There  were  so  many researches  on  Burke’s  New  Rhetoric,  which  are  divided  into  three  fields  namely: philosophical theories of rhetoric, the application in criticism and the theories of rhetorical. But the research on Burke’s Identification Theory began in the 1920s approximately. Many foreign linguists have conducted researches on Identification Theory in many aspects, such as psychology, linguistics, sociology and so on. Burke’s Identification Theory is consistent with Freudian individual self because it is affected by Freud’s theory. Hence, there are many scholars who have studied Identification Theory from the perspective of psychology. The paper Identification as the basis for a Theory of Motivation written by Nelson N. Foote  (1951)  broadened  identification’s  concept  that  identification  should  be  the  basis  of motivation, not for a full theory itself. Mark  H.  Wright  (1994)  analyzed  Burkeian  identification  theory  and  Freud’s  theory. By  studying  the  relationship  between  the  two  theories,  he  found  that  in  order  to  achieve identification, people confessed their ability to more satisfactory answers for their success. The dissertation Kenneth Burke, Identification and Psychoanalytic Theory written by  Berlinski,  E.  Gerard  (1997).  In  this  dissertation,  Edward  distinguished  Burke’s Identification  Theory  from  Freudian  psychoanalytic  theory  and  also  researched  the psychoanalytic theory’s application to Burke’s Identification Theory.

1.2 Previous Studies on State of the Union Address 
State of the Union Address is important because of its great influence on politics and its  value  of  language.  In  the  speech,  the  presidents  try  their  best  to  achieve  identification with  people,  and  to  guide  people  to  take  actions  as  their  expecting.  Therefore,  there  are many linguists who did researches about State of the Union Address in many fields, both at home and abroad.
