To investigate whether there is correlation between Chinese writing proficiencyand English writing proficiency in genre specific writing as well as the generalwriting and to answer the first research question, whether there is correlative relationbetween Chinese writing proficiency and English writing proficiency? Thequantitative results play a vital part in the scientific presentation of the subject’swriting proficiency. Relying on SPSS software and its Mean analysis and PearsonCorrelation Coefficient analysis, the author gets the precise data about the subjects’writing proficiency, as presented in below. In order to answer the first research question, it is inescapable to resort to thescores in different genres. To summarize the general correlation between Chinesewriting proficiency and English writing proficiency, it is necessary to sum up thescores in different rhetorical modes and in the next step to make the comparisonbetween them. The score for Chinese writing and English writing is the mean value ofthe scores of different rhetorical modes.

Conclusion

By analyzing the result obtained in empirical research, the correlation indifferent rhetorical modes and the general correlation between Chinese writing andEnglish writing can be analyzed with the help of SPSS package. The major findingsare as follows:
(1) There exist correlation between Chinese writing proficiency and Englishwriting proficiency. It represents high correlation between Chinese writingproficiency and English writing proficiency. The similarity in writing process and theexistence of common underlying proficiency contributes to the high correlation
(2) In descriptive essay, the correlation between Chinese and English writing isweak correlation. That illustrates that Chinese proficiency in description affectEnglish proficiency in description at a small scale. The weak correlation is due to thesimilarity in literary form of Chinese description and English description as well asthe difference in descriptive mood and the semantic and pragmatic knowledge ofEnglish.
