Chapter5 Images of Hamlet in Zhu’s Translation 

As the thesis has mentioned above, it takes “image” in Hamlet as one of the important seeds  in  literary  translation.  Due  to  the  characteristics  of  English  and  Chinese  and  the differences of the aesthetic conception construction, it may lose cultural connotations while transplanting the images from English to Chinese. And the translator, as the third factor, is also playing a major role in the translation of the image in Chinese translation Hamlet. It is noticeable that a great Chinese translation of Hamlet reveals that Zhu translates the images in Hamlet  successfully.  The  main  reason  is  that  the  flavor  of  Shakespeare’s  works  has  been transferred  via  the  translation  of  image.  Duan  Zili,  who  has  devoted  to  the  study  of Shakespeare’s  works,  has  attained  major  achievements,  especially  for  his  categorization method of the image in Shakespeare’s works, helping get a rounded analysis of these works. Based on Duan (2015)’s categorization of the translation of image in Shakespeare’s works into  three  aspects,  this  thesis  will  take  Zhu’s  Chinese  translation  text  as  a  case  study  to explore and probe into how the translator transplants the images in Hamlet. After that, it will analyze Zhu’s translation strategy with Hamlet. First of all, it is necessary to overview the translation of image in Hamlet. The following chart 1 lists the translation of image in Hamlet.

Conclusion 

The image, as the carrier of culture and characteristic connotation, plays a major part in literary works. Therefore, in the process of cross-cultural communication, as a translator, how to deal with these images in his/her translation sounds greatly important. In other words, due to different language system and culture, it brings about a big challenge for the translators to transplant the images. In Hamlet, Shakespeare makes use of various images to get the effect that he hopes to reveal in the play. Therefore, as a translator, Zhu encounters a big challenge and takes a big responsibility for transplanting the images in Shakespeare’s works. Seed transplanting theory is put forward by Susan Bassnett, whose aim is to deal with the difficulties in translating the poems initially. Later a lot of scholars try to use this theory to solve other problems in literary translation.
