 As  Halliday proposed  the  three  meta-functions  in  his  Systematic  Functional  Grammar  theory,  the ideational function, interpersonal function aims to the analysis on the syntax level which is helpful for the spoken language and written language. However, the textual function aims  to  study  the  discourse  or  even  actual  text  which  is  meaningful  for  the  written language analysis. So it is reasonable to apply the textual function theory to the college English  writing.  As  the  textual  function  theory  include  the  thematic  structure, information  structure  and  cohesion  devices  and  the  latter  two  are  manifested  by  the thematic  progression  pattern  in  the  text,  so  this  paper  aims  to  analyze  the  corpus  from two aspects to find out the influence of the textual function to the college English writing. To  some  extent  the  CET-4  compositions  can  reflect  the  level  of  the  non-English  major college students. Thus, this paper collects data from the corpus about the theme types and thematic progression situation, and then makes forms for further analysis. Finally, we get several findings about this study. (1).There is great difference of the theme types among the four ranks’ compositions. The rate of multiple theme and clause theme in the higher point compositions is much higher than it in the lower point compositions. The rate of simple theme in the 5pcs is the highest.  Under  the  same  title,  the  theme  rate  and  distribution  in  the  four  point  ranks’ composition  also  has  obvious  difference.  It  means  the  thematic  structure  has  direct relation  with  the  final  quality  of  the  composition.  After  integrating  the  data  under  the same  point,  it  is  much  easier  to  see  the  difference  of  thematic  structure.  The  rate distribution of three theme types in the higher point compositions is much even, while in the  5pcs,  the  rate  of  simple  theme  is  much  higher  than  multiple  and  clause  theme. Multiple  theme  contains  the  textual  component  or  interpersonal  component  which  can guarantee the cohesion and coherence of the whole text, while the clause theme can vary the  sentence  form  and  avoid  too  many  short  sentences  in  the  composition  as  it  can contain more information can achieve logical cohesion.
