Chapter 4   Corpus Study 

In  this  chapter,  the  author  will  explain  the  way  to  collect  data  and  shows  the collected  data  in  the  forms.  It  includes  two  aspects  which  are  the  situation  of  thematic structure  and  thematic  progression  pattern  of  the  corpus.  What  follows  is  the  data analysis of each aspect and the findings.  

4.1 Data Collection  

The  author  chooses  the  compositions  from  the  College  English  Examination Committee. There are several reasons for choosing these compositions as corpus. Firstly, the  research  data  from  compositions  written  by  college  students  who  are  not  English major has the university. The result has much more guiding significance. Secondly, the CET4 examination is developing and reforming with the social need of English language. What’s more, its creation is much stricter. The test result can represent the language skill and  ability  to  some  extent.  During  this  study,  the  author  chooses  30  titles  randomly. Under each title they have five compositions with different points which are 2, 5, 8, 11, 14. As there are some grammatical errors and some are not complete without study value, they  will  not  be  included  in  the  research.  Thus  the  number  of  the  compositions  being analyzed  in  this  paper  is  120.  For  each  composition,  the  author  will  analyze  its  theme types  and  thematic  progression  pattern.   The  most  important  step  is  to  calculate  the number and percentage of each kind of theme and the thematic progression pattern. Here is  an  example  of  collecting  data  during  the  study.  The  title  of  the  composition  is  “the Career  I  Pursue”.  The  number  and  rate  of  different  kinds  of  theme  in  this  composition can be described in the form as follow,
