With the increasing trend of globalization, cross-border travel is becoming increasingly popular. However, as there are barriers between different languages, interpreters need to help remove these barriers and facilitate intercultural communication. Thus, guide interpreting was necessitated. In Japan, for example, guide-interpreter certifications are in place, which set specific exams for interpreters to take and are divided into national and regional types of guide interpreters. Tanaka et al. (2020) found that “the training increased students’ interest and understanding of guide-interpreter jobs. Through practical training, the students learned the elements necessary to do the job well.” His study proved that training guide interpreters could help improve the quality of interpretation. However, there is currently no specialized license for guide interpreters in China. More information, including empirical data about this profession, is still needed to understand better and promote the professionalization of guide interpreting in China.

As Yao (2004: 2) mentioned, 'guide interpreters bear the responsibility of helping foreign friends to know our extensive and profound civilization, history and beautiful scenery' At the same time, guide interpreting consists of general escort interpretation and consecutive interpretation for on-site museum interpretation. For guide interpreting, the interpreter's role is not only as a medium of communication between the two parties but also as a coordinator. The interpreter needs to coordinate the expressions of both parties, to fit the linguistic and cultural habits of the interpreting language.

1.2 Description of Task, Speaker, and Interpreter

The author took this task during his internship at Chengdu Yuanji Electronic Technology Co. It lasted for a whole day on August 9th, 2021, including the shuttle service, Chengdu Museum guide interpretation, and the escort interpreting of the dinner after. This report only examines the consecutive interpreting data collected on-site at the Museum. Due to the offering of the basic background by the manager, the interpreter understands that the client has been working in China for several years, which leads to his understanding of Chinese culture to a certain degree as well as his strong interest in Chinese culture. Thus, the author tends to get further information about the client. As a result, the client is 27 years old, working as a foreign teacher in Shanghai. After getting the client's information, the author gets to know that the client has lived in China for five years, traveled to Chengdu 3 times, nd is obsessed with Chengdu cuisine.
