Chapter One Intr oduction
1.1 Introduction of The Awakening
Kate Chopin was born Katherine O’Flaherty. She was an American female writerborn in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA during the 19thCentury. Her works depict women’spursuit of self-independence in marriage and in the whole of social life. She alsodescribes women’s desires and pursuits of sex and emotion. Because of these bold,non-traditional concepts she described, she was condemned by the literary world of thattime, and her works were banned. Her work began to be recognized by the world becauseher works showed the ability of women to independently establish their own awareness.Her works are considered feminist works, and Kate Chopin is considered one of thepioneers of the feminist movement during nineteenth century.The Awakening captures the essence of Chopin and her writing. The story takesplace at the Grand Isle in Louisiana at end of 19thCentury. The heroine, Edna Pound, herhusband Mr. Pontellier, and her two children are visiting on vacation. Although herhusband is very kind to her, he is busy and often has no time to accompany her day to day.So, Edna often visits with Adair Ratignolle, an understanding wife and loving mother,and Robert Lebrun, the landlord’s son. Through contact with Adair, Edna learns about afreer style of expressing emotions, which frees her from the cautious actions andrepressed desires of her past.Edna and Robert often go to the beach to swim and watch Adair do needleworktogether, and a subtle change in their relationship gradually occurs through out the novel.Robert arouses Edna’s lust, and she becomes more and more active, beginning to realizeher independence and sexual needs. Robert realizes that their love is impossible, so hesuddenly leaves for Mexico to avoid further development. The loss of Robert drives Ednato distraction, and she returns to New Orleans with her consciousness and independentsense even stronger. Edna completely abandons her old way of life and moves into asmall house to live, immersing herself in her paintings and claiming her independence.During this time, she has an affair with Alcee Arobin, a man she doesn’t love. Robertsuddenly comes to New Orleans and confesses his love to Edna, which gives Edna hopefor life. But Robert decides not to stay with her. He chooses to leave before Edna can meet him again. Edna becomes lost once more. On arriving back at Grande Isle, the placeof her first awakening, she drowns herself in the sea.

1.2 Aesthetic Elaboration of Absurdity
Absurdity is a relatively late and unique aesthetic form in the
history of westernaesthetics. All unconventional and illogical phenomena of everyday life have beenlabeled as absurd. With the continuous improvement of science and technology in thetwentieth century, a variety of humanistic trends continue to emerge, giving absurdity aneven richer and more profound meaning.The word absurd was originally applied only to music, referencing music indisharmony. The word was later extended to describing illogical and unreasonablemeaning in the world. After the twentieth century, it extended to the failure ofcommunication between man and man, and between man and the world. It is noteworthythat it rose from the category of general social history to the category of human existence,becoming a philosophical concept.
