2.2 Translation Process
After the pre-translation preparations were completed, the translator started to translate Chapter 9 and chapter 11 of the book Healthy Lifestyle-From Pediatrics to Geriatrics. The translation process is composed of three stages as follows:
Firstly, the translator started to translate the source text. To begin with, the translator highlighted unfamiliar words, terminologies and abbreviations and utilized the above-mentioned dictionaries and online resources to look up them. As to the abstract words in the source text, the strategy of abstraction change was employed to help solve the issues. Moreover, there are many nominalization structures and passive sentences in the selected text, which were dealt with guided by the strategies at the syntactic level such as transposition and distribution change. In terms of long and difficult sentences, the translator first divided their structures and then employed the learnt translation methods and strategies of Chesterman’s translation norm theory to respond to those difficulties. In the meantime, those sentences were highlighted so as to better it subsequently. Finally, as to the problems at the discourse level such as coherence and style, the translator organized sentences by taking into account the differences in cohesive devices between English and Chinese and kept in mind conveying the contents of the source text accurately.
Secondly, the translator began to modify the translation. The translator checked the translation of terminologies and abbreviations and ensured their consistency. Then, the translation of long passive sentences was repeatedly modified in order to be faithful to the source text and conform to the speaking habits of the target language. In the end, problems at the discourse level were checked to produce a more coherent and logical translation.
