Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background

The rapid development of information technology has led to significant changesin the way people communicate in their daily lives.The acquisition of information isno longer confined to a single language form,and the transmission medium forinformation is no longer restricted to text.Consequently,the carrier of information isevolving from a single form to multiple forms,and the means of transmittinginformation have expanded beyond language itself.Other modalities such as images,sounds,and gestures have become effective means of communication.Thesemultimodal elements are integrated into dynamic videos to create a discourse thatutilizes multiple modes.Linguists are gradually becoming aware of the changesbrought about by science and technology,realizing that traditional pattern analysismethods are no longer suitable for multimodal discourse research.As a result,a newresearch method called multimodal discourse analysis(MDA)emerged in the 1990s,which overcomes the limitations of traditional linguistics.The MDA has a history ofover 30 years during which scholars from both domestic and internationalbackgrounds have accomplished remarkable research achievements in various fieldssuch as advertising,websites,documentaries,urban promotional videos,and movies.However,most of the previous studies have focused on analyzing static discourse,andthere have been few investigations into the auditory aspects of dynamic discourse.Furthermore,the study of dynamic texts has primarily focused on verbal and visualaspects.Therefore,it is essential to conduct multimodal analysis for dynamic videos.

1.2 Research Purpose and Significance

This thesis constructs an analytical framework utilizing systemic functionalgrammar(SFG),visual grammar,auditory grammar,and Zhang Delu’scomprehensive theoretical framework.The Nobody is used as a case study.Thepurpose of this thesis is to accurately analyze the construction of meaning inanimation and examine the relationship between different modalities using AntConc,Elan,and Praat software for statistical analysis and labeling.

This thesis is of great significance both theoretically and practically.In terms oftheoretical importance,the aim of this thesis is to explore the applicability andfeasibility of MDA theory in analyzing animation,thereby expanding the field ofMDA research.Firstly,the combination of MDA theory and animation analysis canbetter express the meaning and mode of expression in animated works,therebyproviding support for dynamic discourse analysis and animation analysis in theirrespective fields.Secondly,in terms of dynamic discourse analysis,this thesis appliesMDA theory to interpret the important roles played by different elements in animatedworks and further speculates on the themes and ideas that directors or creators want toconvey to the viewer.
