In the animation Nobody,the verbal modality refers to the subtitles displayedbelow the video.By transcribing these subtitles and analyzing them using SFG’s threemeta-functions,this section delves deeply into their language functions,revealing richinformation about plot dynamics and character relationships while conveying thevideo’s intentions.Additionally,some expressions unique to Chinese culture such as‘One hundred thousand heavenly generals’were used in Nobody,which sparkedforeign viewers’interest in Chinese culture.

5.1.1 Ideational function

Ideational functions are used to convey new information and pass unfamiliarcontent to the recipient.Transitivity plays a crucial role in this function,which mainlyincludes six processes from a functional point of view:material process,relationalprocess,mental process,behavioral process,verbal process,and existential process.This paper presents statistics on these six processes in the animation Nobody,asshown in the following table:

6.1 Major Findings

By addressing the research questions raised in Chapter 4 and conducting anextensive analysis in Chapter 5,the thesis yielded the following major findings:

The verbal modality constructs discourse through the participants’lines in theanimation,encompassing conceptual,interpersonal,and textual functions.In terms ofthe ideational function,this thesis analyzes the six processes within the animated textto interpret the meaning conveyed by the transitivity system.The findings reveal thatmaterial and relational processes are most frequently employed.Regardinginterpersonal function,this thesis examines speakers’use of mood and modality toexpress attitudes and judgments.Specifically,declarative sentences and low-modalverbs are observed as being used most frequently in these two aspects.Thisapplication facilitates viewer comprehension of character interactions as well asinteractions between characters and the viewer,highlighting their significance.Furthermore,with respect to textual function,meaning is constructed throughout theentire text via alternating usage of marked and unmarked themes.

In terms of visual modality,the representational meaning mainly conveys plotmeaning through processes of reaction,action,speech,mental,classification,andsymbolism to promote a deeper understanding of the animation’s theme.Theinteractive meaning establishes diverse relationships between the viewer and imageparticipants through various contact acts,social distance,perspective,and modality tocreate an engaging atmosphere that captures the viewer’s attention.The compositionalmeaning integrates different elements’positions in the picture to enrich the story.
