4.1 A Narrative Nirvana: Re-bonding Readers with Flory

Following the bankruptcy of Flory’s prospects, the progression of the narrative also reaches its low point. Nevertheless, Orwell surprises his readers through featuring a glorious return of Flory. Textually speaking, the revival of Flory is plausible for the hero’s rebirth after disillusionment is not uncommon in literary works. But on the part of Orwell’s readers, the re-alliance with Flory will prove difficult.  

Orwell conducts us to re-bond with Flory through introducing more instabilities in the picture. The first thing he does is to inhibit Elizabeth’s luck with Verrall. After three weeks of frivolous flirtations, Verrall still has made no offer of marriage. And “three weeks is a very long time in a small Indian station” (Burmese Days 261). Elizabeth remains unaware that scandals are mongering surrounding her daily dancing and riding with Verrall, matters apropos of her reputation. Mrs. Lackersteen, nevertheless, is a more sophisticated memsahib who smells the danger of their slow progress. She exhorts Elizabeth, in an oblique way, to make haste to secure a marriage proposal from Verrall or cut short the relationship and return to Flory. Elizabeth is shown to concur with her judgment as Flory’s name “ha[s] returned to each woman’s mind, a depressing pisaller” (263). Ironically, it is Mrs. Lackersteen who has played a key role in intercepting the consummation of Flory’s courtship in the first place. And Elizabeth readily uses her notification that Flory has a Burmese mistress as her warrant to spurn Flory. Their capricious behavior adds to our knowledge not only that marriage is a paramount requisite for a young girl in a colonial setting, but also that Flory is but an expedient option throughout their relationship and Elizabeth half feigns her strong antipathy concerning the existence of Ma Hla May to excuse her own inconstancy when she has her eyes on a richer, younger, and more manly object. Although Flory is hardly a positive figure now, we are conducted to expect whether or in what manner a jilted Elizabeth will resume her spell on Flory.
