Chapter Four Translations of Metaphors in Faithful and Virtuous Night from the CIT Perspective 

4.1 The Classification and the Transfer Principles in Faithful and Virtuous Night

In the traditional view, human senses can be divided into five categories: “touch, taste, smell, hearing and sight.” Empirical studies have revealed the fact that the synesthetic metaphor is limitless: it is impossible for it to be mapped at random from one sensory domain to another domain (Ullmann,1964). More importantly, some of the synesthetic metaphors are sensory forms that are not included in the five basics. For example, they are about inner abstract feelings. 

The classification of the synaesthetic metaphors in Faithful and Virtuous Night is partly based on the synaesthetic transfer principles which have been modified by Xu Lian (2004). Besides, considering the distribution of synaesthetic metaphors in Faithful and Virtuous Night, the thesis classified the synaesthetic metaphors according to the source domain. All the synaesthetic metaphors in Faithful and Virtuous Night can be divided into five kinds, involving synaesthetic metaphors in terms of touch, taste, vision, smell and sound. Judging from the collected data, 44 English synaesthetic metaphors have been found in Faithful and virtuous Night. First of all, those examples were sorted as follows in accordance with the order they appear:

5.1 Major Findings of the Study

Firstly, CIT can be applied to reasonably infer the integration processes of synesthetic metaphors. CIT broke through the traditional mapping mode between source domain and target domain, and the four mental spaces involved in metaphor operation are more three-dimensional. Synesthetic metaphor refers to the experience of one sensory stimulus through another sensory stimulus, which consists of two input spaces and their respective elements. These two input spaces work under the control of the generic space, which consists of a shared structure of the two input spaces. Elements of both input spaces are selectively projected onto the blended space, which is the reason for some no-specific-feature elements. As for synesthetic metaphors, some stimuli lack specified features and can then be integrated with more obvious features of other stimuli.
