Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Knowledge Visualization

Knowledge visualization has been developed in just over 20 years.With the concept ofknowledge visualization,there has been an upsurge of research at home and abroad,and manyscholars have carried out related research on knowledge visualization.As for the definition ofknowledge visualization,different researchers have given different answers,and they havealso put forward many forms of knowledge visualization.Therefore,this chapter mainlyintroduces the definition of knowledge visualization by domestic and foreign scholars and thetypes of knowledge visualization tools commonly used at present.

2.1.1 Definitions of Knowledge Visualization

In 2004,Martin J.Eppler and Remo a.Burkard,professors at the University of Luganoin Switzerland,first proposed the concept of information visualization.They believe thatknowledge visualization is a new research field developed on the basis of scientificcomputation visualization,data visualization and information visualization.Knowledgevisualization refers to all the graphical means that can be used to construct and conveycomplex knowledge.The application of visual representation means can promote the creationand dissemination of group knowledge.The benefits of knowledge visualization are social,emotional,and cognitive.Socially,it facilitates the diffusion of knowledge between producersand learners.In the aspect of emotion,it guides learners to actively explore the meaning oflearning,which helps to promote the transfer and innovation of knowledge from the level ofcultural emotion.In terms of cognition,it can present the connection between old and newknowledge and guide learners to memorize and apply new knowledge.Therefore,theapplication of knowledge visualization teaching is wide and the effect is expected.

2.2 Application of Knowledge Visualization Tools in Teaching

There are many researches on knowledge visualization both at home and abroad.Someintroduce the origin and type of knowledge visualization,and some involve the application ofknowledge visualization in various fields.In this part,the author mainly wants to introducethe relevant research situation of knowledge visualization in teaching field at home andabroad.

2.2.1 Previous Studies Abroad

The concept of knowledge visualization was first proposed by foreign scholars Martin J.Eppler and Remo A.Burkard.A large number of literatures show that foreign researchershave already tried to use knowledge visualization tools in teaching.Therefore,the foreignresearch on knowledge visualization in the field of teaching is much earlier than the domesticresearch.
