Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Oral English plays a very important role in primary school English learning.EnglishCurriculum Standards(2011)require students to be able to communicate and discuss simpleeveryday topics and express their own opinions,to cooperate with others to complete tasks,tobe aware of their own mistakes in oral expression and to correct them in time.It is of greatimportance for students to learn and master English well and proficiency in oral English hasbecome an essential skill for students at all levels.Oral English has a positive impact onenhancing their achievements.
However,there are some problems in primary school oral English.Firstly,students havelow interest and participation in oral English.They are less willing to speak English out andtake an active part in the class activities,and their purpose is just to accomplish teacher’stasks with negative attitudes.On the one hand,students only pay attention to their papermarks and do not pay attention to the practice of oral English.On the other hand,althoughsome students are interested in speaking English,they have difficulty in pronouncing becauseof their poor foundation,which makes it difficult to be understood,so they gradually losetheir confidence and become bored with speaking.At the same time,the traditional class isteacher-dominated,with little interaction with students and the teaching styles are relativelydull.Secondly,influenced by exam-oriented education,schools,teachers and students haveattached great importance to the teaching and learning of English knowledge,but neglectedthe teaching and practice of students’oral English.Therefore,students’oral achievements inEnglish are not good enough and the students’oral level is not high,making it hard for themto use the grammar and the vocabulary,and the abilities to use the language are insufficient.Consequently,they cannot express their views.Thirdly,the approaches that students employare inappropriate,which causes them to lack self-discipline and their confidence in thecapacity to learn and speak English becomes less and less.
1.2 Research Objectives and Significance
The purpose of the study is to explore the effectiveness and feasibility of applying theflipped classroom teaching mode in primary school oral English teaching.The study mainlyprobes the effect of the flipped classroom teaching mode on primary school students’Englishlearning motivations autonomy and achievements in oral English.This paper applies theflipped classroom teaching mode to primary school oral English teaching,which offers a newway for oral English teaching.As an innovative teaching approach,flipped classroom bringsteaching practice a new thought,optimizing the current oral English teaching situation andinspiring teachers’deep reflection about their teaching approach and teaching procedures.What’s more,the flipped classroom teaching mode provides the possible theoretical andpractical support for the application of the flipped classroom teaching mode in primary schooloral English teaching,which is beneficial to the development of oral English teaching.
