摘要:The purpose of this thesis is to explore the relationship between hyponymy andEnglish writing by the analysis of theoretical background and the writing examples. Itaims to prove the efficiency and feasibility of applying hyponymy in English writing.

e concluded that therelationship between lexical items belonging to different levels, including the basiclevel, of a certain semantic field is a kind of sense relation known as hyponymy.Different from the reflection or the link between basic-level and hyponymy, the linkbetween prototype and hyponymy can be seen as a typical hyponym represents theconcept or meaning of its superordinate. For example, in China when it comes to bird,the most representative one is sparrow rather than pigeon or robin. This kind ofprototypically hyponymy relations will be conducive to selecting typical examples asillustration in English writing. As writing is based on people's cognitive tendency to make effective transfer of imformation, the hyponymy, as well as its implications inEnglish writing discussed in this paper is aroud the basic-level, superordinate andsubordinate.


Chapter II. Sense Relation and Hyponymy


2.1 Studies on Sense Relation
Talking about sense relation, it is necessary to figure out the relationship anddifference among Reference, sense and sense relation. They all belong to the study ofsemantics concerning word meaning, while they serve as different subtle subsets of meaning so as to make it convenient for scientific research of semantics." Reference is concerned with the relation between a word and the thing it refers to: ormore generally between a linguistic unit and a non-linguistic entity it refers to:: (Hu? Zhuanglin, 2006: 109). ^In contrast, sense refers to the abstract properties of an entity,which deals with therelationship between a lexical item and others in the language. Another differencebetween sense and reference lies in that, to some extent, every word has a sense, i.e.some conceptual content, but not every word has a reference. Grammatical words likebut, if, and do not refer to anything, and words like God, ghost refer to imaginarythings which do not exist in reality. In daily life,it is not convenient to explain themeaning of a word in terms of the thing it refers to,as the thing a word stands formay not always be at hand at the time of speaking. Therefore, it is suggested thatstudying meaning in terms of sense rather than reference will be more practical. In alinguistic system, sense includes sense properties and sense relations. Sense relationis the theoretical base for semantic field, so in this chapter it will be discussed indetail.
