Chapter 2 Related Theories and Literature Review
In the previous chapter, a general introduction to the thesis is presented covering the researchbackground, major concerns and organization of the study. In this chapter, the literature ofprevious studies is reviewed from three perspectives, namely, definition and classification ofrun-on sentences, Error Analysis (EA), corpus linguistics and application of learner corpora.
2.1 Definition and Classification of Run-on Sentence
According to Huang, a run-on sentence is defined as “a sentence in which two or moreindependent clauses (complete sentences) are joined without appropriate punctuation orconjunction” (121). In other words, a run-on sentence is made up of at least two parts (twoclauses), either one of which can stand by itself as an independent clause, but the clauses arefused together with no punctuation at all or incorrectly connected by only commas.Based on the above definition, run-on sentences can be classified into two categories. One iscalled “fused sentence” without any punctuation to separate independent sentences, and theother type of run-on sentence is called “comma splice” in which independent clauses areincorrectly joined only with commas but lacking appropriate conjunction (Bauer et al. 167).
No matter whether in written or in spoken form of Chinese, there are a large number ofChinese run-on sentences owing to its parataxis feature, random use of commas and otherfactors. Especially in some literary works, run-on sentences can be occasionally used as a rhetorical device for specific purposes. Under the influence of Chinese, Chinese EFL learnersseem to be accustomed to expressing ideas with no connectives between sentences whilewriting in English. The following examples about both types of run-on sentences are all takenfrom the first sub-corpus of the learner corpus in the present study, in which students arerequired to write a composition entitled “Advantages and Disadvantages of the Internet” inthe final examination of the first term.
