Chapter One Overview of EST and Discourse
1.1 Overview of EST and EST Translation
Before the emergence of EST in the late 1960s, the English language world hadgot along very well without EST, and people at broad learned foreign language justfor pleasure or prestige. The traditional English language teaching and learning wasalmost literature-oriented. English was their tool to read English novels, history, or itwas just the way to indicate a well-rounded Education. A knowledge of English fornon-English speakers became the shallow symbol of a good nurture, although fewlearners doubted whether it was reasonable. Then have a look at the English teachingat home. Over the past twenty years, the trend of English teaching and learning inChina was completely exam-oriented. Although many English learners in ourcountry was able to get a straight A score in English tests, they could not get used tothe real English-speaking environment. In contrast with Chinese students'competence in English multiple choices test, they were far from the excellence inoral English communication. Thus in the late 1960s,there was no doubt that somepeople accused English courses of its futility, irrelevance and inappropriateness atbroad and at home. At that time the traditional purpose-free stroll through theEnglish language world seemed no longer appropriate and necessary in the harshenvironment of competitive society. Since then, EST has prospered rapidly all overthe world.
Now the author wants to go back to the basic question: What is EST? The authorneeds to answer the question by defining the EST clearly. With the global up-surging use of EST in writing academic technical papers, spreading scientific theories and exchanging scientific ideas, EST has prospered. Thisis followed by more and more frequent use by scientists and technicians so as to meetthe precise and efficient scientific communication. From the perspective of register theory, EST could be seen as the register ofscience and technology for modem English. With this view point in mind, the authorregards EST as a lecture on science & technology, a talk within a group of people who speaking scientifically, a TV program on a scientific & technical subject, a scientific& technical paper, etc.Understood properly, EST could be regarded as an approach to languageteaching and learning, which is based on the language learners' demands and purposesas well. In other words, a significant but simple question lays a solid foundation forall the EST, “Tell me what you need English for and I will tell you the English thatneed became the guiding principle of EST.,’(Tom Hutchingson & Alan Waters 1987:8)As long as the author has got a definite answer to the language learners' purposes, thesolutions to all the other issues related to EST courses will tell their own tale, such asthe content, teaching material, methodology, etc.Since all the solutions derives from the prior analysis of the language learners'needs and purposes, the author defines EST as goal-oriented language learningapproach in the field of scien本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
