摘要:在字典的定义,一个概念,其内容具有一定的复杂性,应在字典中通过其他不太复杂的概念。这是全球领先的原则,所有定义写作必须根据(博Svensen,1993:135)。
Chapter 1Mapping English Learner's Dictionary
This chapter, aiming at transforming the basic information of ELD,will briefly introduce the definition of learner's dictionary, thedevelopment of ELD and the lexicographic features of ELD.本章瞄准转化ELD的基本信息,将简要介绍学习者的词典,开拓ELD ELD字典功能的定义。
1.1 Deflnition of Learner's Dictionary
Dictionary is a text conveying information. Different from othersuch texts, it does not present the material in a connected, coherentsequence, but divided into thousands of short chapters, that is, dictionaryentries, and these are usually arranged in an arbitrary way as regardscontents, that is to say in alphabetical order according to the spelling ofthe entry words (Bo Svensen, 1993:2). Zgusta (1971) argues that; Adictionary is a systematically arranged list of socialized linguistic formscompiled from the speech-habits of a given speech-community andcommented on by the author in such a way that the qualified readerunderstands the meaning of each separate form, and is informed of therelevant facts concerning the function of that form in the dictionary. Thevalue of a dictionary lies on the information it provides. Without theinformation, a dictionary cannot be a dictionary, but a stack of paper.
Different users need different information from dictionaries. Theexpectations and requirements of the users are various. Thus dictionaries, describing linguistic units, can be divided into different types. In theperspective of numbers of languages presented in dictionaries, dictionaries can be divided into monolingual, bilingual, and multilingualdictionaries. Monolingual dictionaries aimed at non-native learners of alanguage such as Cambridge International Dictionary of English (CIDE),Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE), CollinsCOBUILD Learner 's Dictionary (COBUILD), Oxford AdvancedLearner 's Dictionary (OALD), and Macmillan English Dictionary forAdvanced Learners (MEDAL) which are typical English learner'sdictionary setting a good example in the compilation of learner'sdictionary.
Learner's dictionary which is also called pedagogical dictionaryaims primarily at non-native learners of a language. The degree towhich dictionaries have been integrated into the learning processvaries from culture to culture. The true dictionary as a learning tool isstill in its infancy (Hartmann, R. R. & Gregory J, 2000). Readers oflearner's dictionary are classified into two kinds: native languagelearners and foreign language learners. Learner's dictionary aiming atnative language learners pays much more attention to the definition ofeach entry, while that aiming at foreign language learners emphasizes the usage and grammatical information of each entry. Thus the latterkind features the simplified defining language, detailed syntacticinformation, a focus on phraseology and the extensive use of examplesentence.
