ption task was employed to explore the characteristics of FM production among Chinese EFL learners. The images used in the experiment depicted static events were [animacy-] and [movement-]. Notably, both their native language and English spatial concept coding exhibited an inclination for dynamic expressions. Specifically, while all dynamic expressions in English were FM sentences, the production (45.13%) was slightly less frequent than static expressions (54.87%). In contrast, Chinese dynamic expressions include FM (46%) and verb-object sentences (30.26%). From a cognitive perspective, FM expressions rely on the existence of factive motion, with the relationship between the two established regions in brain associated with semantic coding. This represents the cognitive neural mechanism underlying FM (Lai & Desai, 2016). Human interaction with the real world shapes an inclination for dynamism, projecting embodied experiences onto inanimate and static entities when describing spatial situations from a subjective perspective. The high proportion of dynamic expressions in the participants’ native language suggests that they tend to endow static entities with dynamic semantic features, driven by their own experiences and individual expression needs. Given the universality of human cognition, this inclination for dynamism is not limited to native language coding but can also transfer to other languages. In terms of linguistic expression, the data revealed differences in the use of motion verbs between English and Chinese FM expressions. Specifically, manner verbs are significantly suppressed in Chinese FM expressions compared to their use in English. Both path and manner verbs are used with some frequency in English, without evidence of suppression. Overall, Chinese tends to emphasize path more than manner. According to the Path Condition theory (Matsumoto, 1996), path information must be present in FM expressions in both languages. In Chinese FM expressions, the combination of path information and manner verbs is used most frequently. However, in English, path information is primarily presented through prepositions or prepositional phrases, which are function words that are attached to verbs. Both Chinese and English FM expressions emphasize the addition of path information.
