2.2 The Relationship Between Two Identities
Ono’s identities as a narrator and a character have been analyzed in detail earlier. It is clear that there is a potential connection between the two identities. Next, we will further explore the coordination relationship and causal relationship between the two identities.
2.2.1 Coordinating Relationship
Phelan believes that double identities are independent but unified, so they complement each other. when Ono tells his story of the past, it is his empirical self. when the narrator is the narrator of the present, which is narrating self. In different periods, Ono has different levels of psychological maturity, the narrating self and the empirical self may influence each other.
Recollection is the way in which Ono unfolds his story, so his narration is selective, vague and dissociated. As a result, much of his account is unreliable, partly because of Ono’s deliberate concealment and partly because of the uncertainty of memory. Daniel argues that “Ishiguro’s development of unreliable first –person traits, his manipulations of generic expectation and development, his manipulation of register, and his acts of narration elision as techniques that serve his play on differences between individual and cultural memory” [46]109. Therefore, the reader should carefully examine Ono’s narration and judge which one is reliable and which is not, so that the intention of the implied author can be decoded.

5 Motivations of Unreliable Narration in An Artist of the Floating World
5.1 Ono’s Motivations of Unreliable Narration
The generation of unreliable narration in An Artist of the Floating World is not only due to the unreliability of memory itself. As the subject of the narration, Ono also subjectively creates unreliable factors in memory. Ono’s motivations come from two aspects: one is because of his vanity, namely, the desire for fame and status, and the other is to escape the responsibility for war.
5.1.1 Ono’s Pursuit of Fame and Fortune
