At the level of revealing the deeper meaning of the unreliable narration, Ono’s vanity behind his guilt is revealed. An Artist of the Floating World, on the surface, presents the narration of Ono’s confession. Indeed, Ono’s narration demonstrates his vanity at every turn. Every action of Ono demonstrates that, rather than being a forgotten individual by society, it is preferable to be a celebrity, whether with a good or a poor reputation.
Ono’s emphasis on personal endeavor is actually a betrayal driven by his pursuit of fame and fortune. The first turning point in his life is the change in painting style, which can be more reasonably explained. Ono loves to decorate his past and make excuses related to honor for his actions, and he states that the reason he changes his painting style is because of responsibility, because the painter needs to catch and maintain something more tangible than the fleeting delight of the morning light. However, in the author’s opinion, the actual reason is that he cannot obtain the fame and money he wants through Utamaro. At that time, the Okada-Takeda Organization is a well-known local organization where painters compete to exhibit their work in their galleries for public recognition. Matsuda’s clothes, speech, and thoughts all indicate that he is a high-status, wealthy man who shows Ono on his first meeting that he is providing Ono with “an important opportunity to enhance your reputation” [45]88 and suggests that “the fact is, the Okada-Shingen does not exist in isolation, there are young men like us in all walks of life-in politics, in the military-who think the same way” [45]17. After these words, Ono betrays Mori-san and begins to create militaristic paintings. Reader can understand Ono’s desire of superficial honor and outside attention.
6 Conclusion
Kazuo Ishiguro is accustomed to organizing novels as first-person narrators, with “I” dominating the narration while also directing the narration toward unreliability, such as the narrator’s “self-deception”. Moreover, Kazuo Ishiguro is also accustomed to structuring novels with “memories”, embedding the experiences and feelings of the characters into memories, disrupting and reorganizing the originally clear boundaries of time and space and the original appearance of the story, and making the originally reliable narration unit no longer reliable. An Artist of the Floating World also continues this style. Therefore, using unreliable narration not only explains how Ono becomes an unreliable narrator and how unreliable factors work but also clarifies the underlying motives behind unreliable narration. Unreliable narrator Ono and his unreliable narration, unreliable narrative progression, and unreliable narrative motivation are analyzed in order help readers to better understand the practical significance behind the novel.
First, neither Ono is reliable as a character nor as a narrator. As a narrator, Ono realizes the unreliability of the narration through narrative techniques such as selective narration, ambiguous narration, and digressive narration to create a perfect image of himself and evade accusations. In the novel, Ono always selectively recounts some events that show his honor, status, justice, and bravery to create a positive image, and deliberately conceals his inner intentions. In addition, Ono exone本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
