However, compared with its importance and difficulty,investigations into stylistically “non-equivalent” problems in fictiontranslation are rather sporadic.(2) Rarely has any research probed into stylistically non-equivalent issuesspecifically occurring in the translation of bilingual writers' works. TheAuthor of the thesis puts forward some original ideas in this regard, and lendsa new perspective to stylistic non-equivalence.(3) The thesis also fills in the void of translation research on the novel TheVermilion Gate, which ranks among Lin's most remarkable trilogy novels, yethas remained untouched in the field of translation criticism.

1.3 Research Questions

(1) What can be defined as stylistic non-equivalence and what are the typicaltypes of stylistic non-equivalence in fiction translation?(2) What are the causes of various stylistically non-equivalent features andwhat factors should be weighed and balanced，when the translator seeksto address stylistically non-equivalent problems in fiction translation?(3) What specific strategies can be summarized from the comparative studyof the translations of The Vennillion Gate so as to compensate fordifferent types of stylistic non-equivalence in fiction translation?

1.4 Research methodology and Rationale of the Material

The research methodology of the thesis is comparative case study withqualitative analysis. Lin Yutang's novel The Venmlion Gate and its two ChineseTranslations by Pi-yiin Sung and by Lao Long & Hei Ma are taken as case studymaterial. The rationale for the selection lies in the following reasons: (1) Lin Yutang'snovel The Vermilion Gate is a typical realistic fiction that that bears general stylisticfeatures of the genre; (2) the novel features exquisiteness in language，thus serving asan adequate material for the inspection of both the overt and the covert stylistically"non-equivalent" features in fiction translation; (3) it is carefully and elaboratelyrendered by two highly regarded translators, Pi-yiin Sung, and Lao Long, who areresourceful in tackling stylistic "non-equivalence" and whose renderings offerilluminating insights into stylistic translation strategies.
