nctionalGrammar, the interpersonal meaning of texts concerns the social relations between thespeaker or the writer and the hearer or the reader and the attitude, affection, andjudgment expressed by language in the course of social communication. Interpersonalmeaning provides a perspective of studying the textual coherence, which is beyond thescope of giving explanation from the perspective of the experiential meaning. Thepresent thesis attempts to compensate for the Cohesive Harmony proposed by Hallidayand Hasan by seeking for the interpretation of English texts from the perspective of theinterpersonal meaning and the discussion of context, mood, modality, intonation andevaluation are included.

Chapter TwoLiterature Review
2.1 Researches on Cohesion
Cohesion is the core of textual analysis in Systemic Functional Grammar and theconcept and the theoretical scope of cohesion are developing.The terminology of cohesion is first proposed by Halliday, which greatly developsthe study of cohesion and coherence. And then he divides cohesion into grammaticalcohesion and lexical cohesion (Halliday, 1964). However, the original study on textualcohesion is traced back to Jakobson (1960) who makes an analysis of syntacticconfiguration and repetition occurred in literary texts. In 1968, Hasan discussesgrammatical cohesion in texts and he makes a great contribution to the study oncohesion for his analysis on the relationship between cohesion and coherenceconstituted by various devices of substitution in texts. Halliday and Hasan (1976) laterdefine cohesion as a semantic relation and a textual concept which is utilized toorganize ideational meaning and interpersonal meaning to realize textual meaning.Cohesion is considered as a device of realizing texts and it is related semantically andgoes beyond the limitation of length of sentence. Moreover, the publication of Cohesionin English symbolizes the creation of cohesive theory. Gutwinski (1976) develops theconcept of cohesion practically by analyzing the phenomena of cohesion existed inliterary texts in terms of grammatical and lexical cohesion. Hu Zhuanglin (1994)develops the theory of cohesion by adding sound and intonation into cohesive study.Zhang Delu (2000) discusses explicate cohesive devices and implicate cohesive devicesexisted in situational context and cultural context since he advocates introducing theelement of context to the study of textual cohesion.

2.2 Researches on Coherence
The concept of cohesive harmony is proposed to measure the variation of thecoherence of texts, and thus the concept of coherence is in need of discussion if we aimto do research on cohesive harmony of texts.The study on coherence is considered to be the condition of acquiring unit for a textin rhetoric. However, the study on coherence did not gain its discussion until 1960s inthe scope of text analysis (Miao Xingwei, 1998), and Wei Zaijiang (2007) considers thatthe specific and well-accepted definition of coherence is hard to settle since it is acomplex phenomenon of psychology, linguistics and philosophy.Du Shihong and Robert Cummins (2011) argue that cohesion is a scientific conceptsince it is objective. Cohesion is a concrete concept formed in the objective linguisticworld and it is definite; on the contrary, coherence is a philosophical concept and it is asubjective and abstract concept.
