Louw (1993: 157), directly employing the term ―semantic prosody, perceived it as ―consistent aura of meaning with which a form is imbued by its collocations. Pattington (1998: 68) defined it as ―the spreading of connotational coloring beyond single  word  boundaries.  In  this  definition,  semantic  prosody  was  more  strongly associated  with  connotation.  Hunton  and  Thompson  (2000:  5)  highlighted  the pragmatic  function  of  semantic  prosody,  in  other  words,  the  attitudes,  positions, opinions  and  emotional  orientation  of  language  speakers.  For  Hoey  (2000:  232), semantic prosody was the combination of word items and some certain meanings, and it  is  an  atmosphere  over  the  word  collocation.  From  the  definitions  above,  it  is obvious that semantic prosody, not only simple collocation of words, but the concord relationship between words and its collocations, can even overpass the meaning of the single word thus spreading in the whole sentence and the context.

4 Analysis and Discussion

This chapter will give an insightful analysis and further discussion of the words bling and ―Xing‖(性), and their significant collocations, semantic prosody, the process of  semantic  change,  probing  into  their  changing  mechanism,  lexicalization  or grammaticalization.  

4.1 Research on English Word Bling 

Raw  data  are  gained  by  preliminary  research  of  the  English  word  bling  from three  sources,  which  is  beneficial  for  the  present  study.  This  section  will  present different aspects of the word bling: its diachronic changes. From  the  table,  it  is  clear  that  there  are  36  cases  of  bling  as  separate  word. Compared  with  the  total  number  of  88,  this  word  does  not  show  stable  or  popular status in the history of English language.
