Chapter Four an CIT-based Analysis of Verbal Humor inTwo Broke Girls

4.1 Distribution of the Four Types of Verbal Humor in SitcomTwo Broke Girls

In the present thesis, the author selects 77 scripts from twenty-five episodes inthe second and third season of American sitcom Two Broke Girls, so as to give anexplicit explanation about verbal humor. The selected scripts can be divided into fourtypes: personification humor, displacement humor, analogy humor andself-deprecating humor. Correspondingly, these four types of verbal humor can beexplained based on simplex network, mirror network, single-scope network as well asdouble-scope network. In the following table, the number and frequency of these fourtypes of humor as well as the corresponding conceptual integration networks will beshown.As is presented in Table 4.1, personification humor occupies 36.3% of the totalhumorous utterances selected from the 25 episodes. It is very easy for the audiences tounderstand and can be explained by simplex network which is the simplest network.Therefore, personification humor is the most frequently used. Ranked the second isthe displacement humor which take 29.9% and can be analyzed through mirrornetwork. The analogy humor is less used than the former two, which takes 20.8% andcan be explained by single-scope network. Obviously, the first three of them accountfor 87% of total scripts. And these three types of humor is more frequently used thanthe fourth one. As is shown in Table 4.1, the number of self-deprecating humor is 10,which is the least frequently used humor. And it can be explained throughdouble-scope network which is the most complicated network.

Conclusion

In the present chapter, the descriptive study towards verbal humor has beencompleted. The purpose of this study is to analyze the generation process of verbalhumor in American sitcom Two Broke Girls and the distribution of the four types ofhumor. In the former chapters, in order to achieve this aim, the research of humor,description about Conceptual Integration Theory, distribution of the four types ofhumor, the scripts selected from Two Broke Girls and so on has been introduced. Insome aspect, this study may lack academic or intellectual creativeness, owing to thelimitation of my competence or maybe Conceptual Integration Theory is toocomplicated to make an analysis and explanation. In this chapter, the major findings,possible implications, the limitations of this study and some suggestions for futurestudy will be introduced and concluded.
